I'm new to this forum, and wanted to state in replie to some of the bad reviews the VTR has had. I've been shooting for about 30 years Rem's, Win's, Rug's, Sav's, Weatherby's and a few others all have sharp shooting guns.

I've had my 308 VTR for a while now got the one specialy made for Cabelas with 24 inch barrel and no muzzle brakes. Which I like way better as the 308 dosent have much kick and its way quiter. The cost $669 out the door. I put a high quality 4-18 by 42 Nikon scope on ($450). Very cool looking gun !

This gun is an absolute tack driver ! right out of the box ! after sighting in and a good break in it will shoot 1/2 inch groups at 100 yds and 1 inch groups at 200 yds all day long with 168 gr. high quality ammo. First shot cold barrel is right on the money every time inless I make a mistake.
For you people having any kind of trouble with this gun not grouping tight, maybe its shooter error, cheap ammo, cheap scope,  all of these will make a good gun shoot off, but belive me its not the gun's fault !

I have done nothing to the gun except adding the scope the gun is stock, and the stock that comes with the gun is a good quality stock. An upgraded high quality stock and good solid bedding and this gun might shoot 1/3 inche groups or less at 100 yds !  It handles very good is very comfortable and I love the new ajustable triger very nice feel ! and WOW what a fun gun to shoot !!  I'm looking at stocks/bedding as we speak for tighter groups.  Way to go Remington !

Iron, welcome to Optics Talk and glad you like your rifle.

Teddy, barrel break-in procedures and beliefs very from camp to camp.
You'll get a variety of answers on that subject. I say clean good and start shooting, but others will say different and they are probably right.
I've done barrel break-in by the book and without the book and feel I got very similiar results overall. A barrel either shoots, or it don't.

break in methods vary to the degree that at extremes they contradict each other. Since each of these extremes worked for their supporter the only conclusion can be that there is no correct way. the only common thing I have found is they all start with clean swabs.

might add that I've started a spr 300 wsm with moly, and after 2000 rds, it has never been cleaned and cold bore first shots are in the quarter. this represents a bore cleaning and break in method in the negative sense.

I have a VTR in .204 Ruger, and the first 100-yard group (with factory ammo) had 4 out of 5 shots touching. Not all ammo shoots like that, but was at the range the other day and the first 5-shot group with Nosler Custom ammo with their 32-grain Ballistic Tip was .56".  I was mostly testing a scope for adjustment accuracy and didn't have any wind flags out, and there was a variable breeze. This was after several hundred rounds of prairie dog shooting over the past couple of years, with only intermittent cleaning, sometimes not until after 200+ rounds had been fired.

Around here (southwestern Montana) the VTR's have a pretty good rep for shooting well. Of course YMMV.

Oh, and by the way the scope was a Hawke Frontier SF 4-16x. It looks to be a good buy, as the optics were good and the adjustments were very repeatable. Good eye relief too.

Hey, I think you gong to love your new VTR ! I've been busy put the Nikon scope on my boys 17 hmr and I got a new Alpen Apex 4-16x44 for 220 $ thats on my VTR now. Every bit as nice and clear as the Nikon and the Alpen has a life time warrenty, built very well weight is 19 oz heavyer but tough and very good reviews online. I have 10x50 Alpen bin'o  and they are some of the best I have had. Alpen is a US company that started in about 97, very high quality for about 1/2 or less the price of Nikon or Leupold.

The way I broke in my VTR was I cleaned the barrel first than fires about 5 shots cleaned the barrel a few times with cleaner and repeated this about 5 times.  Now I'll clean it about every 40 - 50 shots or when I feel like it.
I'll post some pics soon.  Bear

Oh and after checking into a stocks and bedding online research said not to as the stock that comes with the VTR has contact points that contact the barrel and smoth out barrel harmonics and improves accuracy and that free floating the barrel will hurt accuracy so..... I think I'll wait and keep the stock for now.

Great looking rifle! The .308 VTR is on my short list.Is there any thing else that I should be considering in the not totally crazy price range for punching paper?

Yessuh.... And they continue to strive to make them even more so. Hard to beat a company that has it's sights set on the long haul.

hello

That is a nice rilfe you have there.
I really think that the problem with the remmington company is that they are not keeping up with other gun manufacturers. not just savage

Remington rifles use to be worth the extra money but not any more with rifles costing less
shooting just as good or better. why would you spend the extra money for just the name.

I have a alpen spoting scope  and it works very well for what it cost

My Savage 10FP is by far the most accurate OOTB rifle that I have ever owned or had the pleasure of firing!! I have owned Remingtons, FN's, Winchester, Howa, Mossberg, Marlin, and Savage.

I just recently sold my baby to fund specialist's visits for my wife, and I will be back into another Savage as soon as I possibly can!! Another 10FP or possibly the 10PC is on the top of my list for sure!!
