I am glad i found this forum. i have searched this site and read alot and there seems to be alot of knowledge here so i am hoping you can help me. I am going to buy 2 new scopes, rings and bases for 2 diff rifles. Both rifles came with simmons 8 pt in the package deal. Its apparent that the simmons scopes aren't good enough for these rifles, however, i have taken a few deer using them but its time to get something better as just these past few years, i noticed they aren't much more than average everyday daylight scopes.
I want to stay under $200 for each scope. But to be more specific, i also believe that the rings and bases i get for these scopes are just as important. So i am asking for help here too. I have a nikon prostaff which has never failed me. i really like this scope and am considering another. however, for the price i think there are others i could look at. Variety is always nice. The scopes will be mounted on a Win M70 30.06 and a Savage 110 7mm-08. Please suggest rings, bases i should be considering. I want to do this right this time and am quite new to the world of optics and usually take the opinions of the gun working the gun counter. The new redfield scope looks quite interesting but don't know much about them.. Someday i would like to have a Zeiss but really need to keep my purchases below $400 not including rings/bases. Please help.. |

oh, i forgot to mention, i am looking for a scope with good eye relief. IN Wisc we have to bundle up during the cold and have alot of woods to hunt in so eye relief is key.

I think you will be hard up to find another scope any better than the prostaff based on your budget. There are a bunch of scopes under $200 that are great scopes. But I doubt you are going to see much if any of a performance increase over the prostaff with any of them.
As far as rings and bases, I would go with Talley. They are about $45 and they are very nice and very strong. Winchester http://swfa.com/Winchester-C2572.aspx Savage http://swfa.com/Talley-Lightweight-Aluminum-1-Scopemount-P4970.aspx |

I agree with ST73 about the Talley base/rings. For scopes you might look at Elite 3200 3x9 for either and the 3x10 SA for the 7mm08. Burris Fullfield 3x9 would be a good choice for under $200. Bushnell Legends are supposed to be pretty good also. And don't forget the new Vortexes; A Diamondback 3x9 or 4x12 look like a good choices too.

What about the Nikon Team Primos scopes? If those really do have the previous generation Monarch glass in them, he'd definitely see a difference over the ProStaff. I'm not sure what else would match it at $199.

I agree with the nikon primos or the burris FFII, both are dependable with good glass.

Problem with the Primos and the burris is they cost to much to fit in his budget. He needs to spend $200 with rings and bases. Even with the talley and the prostaff he will be a few dollars over his budget.

I think I'd still kick in that little extra $ and get the Nikon 3-9X40 Team Primos anyway! The extra $50-$75 the Team Primos adds to the scope and ring combination will soon be forgotten after you use the scope. It's the best deal going for $200. Plus, you get a free camo jacket with it from SWFA.

PENTAX PIONEER 3-9X40(plex) matte black $119.99 on WWW.SWFA.COM . This scope is just a relabeled Burris Fullfield II. I owned one for a short time and it is nice. You can compare the specs ... they are the same scope. I dont think you will find a better fully multi coated scope in this price range except maybe a Weaver Classic which Ive never owned.

Maybe I read him wrong?
I also concur with the FFII being a worthy consideration, and that the Talley's are a slam-dunk choice for rings/bases.

The talley rings look like a must. Thanks for that suggestion.
i ended up with a VX1 Leupold last night. I looked at the nikon but the tube was so much shorter it didn't leave much for adjustment. The VX1 had a slightly brighter appearance, much more eye relief than the prostaff and got it for $200 even. The nikon was $169. I have a prostaff on my marlin which is nice but had to do one piece base because of the tube length. I hate one piece bases as they can interfere with the ejection port. Thanks for all the posts. I look forward to spending some time here as i need to upgrade my savage now. Hopefully ordering the talley rings today. RIght now the savage has the Pentax pioneer. got it on special for $99. was going to upgrade but may try the new rings first and see if that is part of the accuracy problem. |

Everyone has it right with the Talley
For the scope choice I would go with Bushnell 3-10x40 Elite 3200 Rifle Scope
Stock # - 323104M
It has the rain guard feature for the elements, and comes with at free pullover for a limited time. Great scope and no questions asked warranty too. You dont' even have to have the receipt! Good reviews and quality name. |

I realize you already made your purchase, but I would personally return the VX1 if it were me. The Nikon 3-9X40 Team Primos is a MUCH better scope than either the VX1 or the Prostaff, plus it's the same price you paid for the VX1 and it includes a free camo jacket with purchase! The Team Primos is a rebadged Monarch. You can buy it from SWFA, who provides this site you're posting on...

But does the team primos have the same tube length as the prostaff? The nikon scopes were alot shorter than the other brands including the burris, without doing a one piece base, i couldn't get the scope back far enough without stretching forward. the bell on the end of the nikon is larger than the others.

Don't know. Give SWFA a call @ 972-726-7348 and ask for Chris, Christopher, Brady, or David. They have them in stock and can tell you what the tube length is.
Also, I believe member "pyro6999" on this site has both the Prostaff and the Team Primos. He has his Team Primos mounted on a long action rifle with no problems. You might send him a PM for specifics on tube length as well.
