It jumped him while he was bent over cleaning the deer. Wish I had pics to share Ill have to talk to his dad. His dad asked if he went to the doctor he said he didnt want to ruin his leave so he had his girlfriend sew him up.

Wes, do you know what part of Texas the injured hunter was hunting? On the ranch I lease for hunting in Sutton Co., Texas near Sonora, the ranch manager has seen what appears to be a family of four lions (cougars) all at the same time. He said it looked like a big male, a smaller female and two juveniles about 2/3 full grown. ONE HUNTER IN A BLIND SWEARS HE SAW A LION JUMP TO THE GROUND OUT OF A LIVE OAK OVERHANGING A DEER FEEDER PEN AND RUN OFF BEFORE HE COULD GET A SHOT! Some of the hunters saw one jump into the middle of the ranch road while driving on the way back to camp after hunting, and it ran off before anyone could get a shot off. I have seen the tracks myself, and the goat carcasses are piling up. These cats are killing about one goat a day which is probably keeping the whitetail deer a little safer as the goats are slower. We stopped to look at a dead goat the last day I was hunting (Jan. 10) and it was obvious a cat much larger than a bobcat had done the deed. The claw wound trackss were about 1.75" apart, and the cat had just about bit the goats head off from the back. Fang spacing looked to be around 4-5". You can bet no one walks around on the ranch unarmed these days! The ranch owner has brought in a professional hunter with dogs and riding mules, but so far he has had no luck. All the deer hunters including yours truly are pretty wired up to kill a trophy Texas lion! I believe we will be making trips to the ranch a little more often.
The photos below were of a lion taken outside Junction, Texas, which is about 80 miles east of the ranch I hunt. I think this is a young lion, not necessarily a juvenile, but I am sure they get larger based on the fang wounds on the dead goat I saw.
I would love to take one of these for the trophy room!

The ranch where I went hog hunting last weekend (near Victoria, TX) has reportedly had a few sightings of mountain lions (cougars) recently as well.

I'll try to get some more information - I know he went hunting with a group of guys on a ranch in Texas and was the only one that got a deer and while he was cleaning the deer the cougar jumped on him, he never heard it comming.
A friend of mine in San Antonio has an african lioness mounted in his den - it came into camp at night hunting them while he was on safari. If that doesnt make you want a Trijicon nothing will.
Supposedly there is one around my farm in southern Iowa but I havent seen it, turkey population is way down.
When I was living in Washington state I heard that young cougars were the most likely to attack humans and also that there was a night and day difference between if you were standing on two feet as opposed to being on all fours - it's like flipping the on switch to be on all fours. That's seriously scary stuff right there. He's lucky he wasn't killed! I suppose this is why I prefer to hunt in pairs. There's just too many things that can go wrong when you hunt alone (snake bite, broken leg, medical emergency, and I guess cougar attacks!). Let us know if you get more info. I'd be curious to know where this happened. It seems we're getting more and more of these big cats here in Texas these days. |

Just letting you Yanks know what we've got over here in Australia...
For years now around Australia, people have reported seeing large black or brown cats roaming around in the bush. Australia doesn't have any native feline species.
A few years back someone finally shot one (with a 7mm Rem Mag)... They ran tests to find out what cat species it was...turned out this large cat was just a feral cat!

And judging by all the reported sightings it isn't a one off.
More of the same cat:
It's definitely not Photoshopped.

That is a pretty large one for Texas/Mexico. In Mexico, the guys at the ranch I hunt tell me that they travel in a 50 mile circle and are rarely seen in the same place. If you see one you won't see him again until he comes back around the circuit. Lately after a few years of drought they have not been traveling so much and have learned that they can just camp out around the deer feeders during hunting season and easily stay full all winter long. This puts them in close proximity to humans and inevitably attacks will occur.

i came across one once, it was during elk season in wyoming. i was sitting on a fallen pine tree listening for elk to move around since people were pushing timber all around me. all of a sudden (seemingly out of nowhere) a mountain lion appeared. it was an uneasy moment for me, how something that seems so big moves so gracefully and so quietly through so much dead fall. it was spooky to say the least. just as fast as it appeared it also vanished.

I think the one my friend saw jump out of the tree over the feeder pen was doing exactly that - it was hunting deer (or goats) at the feeder, just like us!!! The lions are definitely decimating the ranchers goats, though. I hope for his sake they are taken soon. I just wouldn't mind if the taker was me, because man, that would make an awesome full-body mount or throw! The coat out to be in prime condition considering they are well fed and it is winter.

Someone finally got one on video in Western Maryland . I 've seen 2 in my 30 years of going up to Garrett County , one when I was 13 and again 3 years back. Now that bears have really taken hold , sightings are a bit far and few between.

I saw this thread, and I first thought it was Chris II had found an older woman who took advantage of him in the deer stand.
