I have a few questions. I like to think I'm a good shooter, with having a 10 shot 1" grouping at 25m with the standard military M68, Comp M, Red dot, a whole bunch of different names, you get the picture. I am currently wanting to build a Model 700 Sendero SFII in 7mm Rem Mag, and was wanting to know what should I change out stock wise to help increase barrel life, accuracy, and overall reliablilty. I know the Model 700 is an great starting weapon when it comes to reliability and accuracy, but with a Schmidt and Bender 3-12X50 variable power classic hunting scope, I want to be able to shoot groups of 3-5 rounds in a 2-3" grouping at 500 yards, which isn't too farfetched, but I have no clue what would be good scope rings and bases, a good barrel if the 26" fluted won't work, a bolt(read something about changing out for accuracy) and a new trigger, even though I've heard that their stock trigger isnt bad. I also plan on using Winchester Supreme Ballistic Silvertips in 150 grain, just because I've never heard bad about that ammo. I have this one chance to build an amazing rifle, and don't mind spending a little money, even if my wife thinks otherwise, haha. I plan on using this set up for whitetail and elk mainly, maybe some blacktail and mules at one point, when I find the land, and I hope to be able to engage the elk no further than 800 yds.

As far as the bullets go, if you haven't tried others you will never know if your gun will do better with a different one. Try different ones. Thats a light bullet too and will have the wind play with it at those distances more so than a heavier bullet. Do you have any experience in longer ranges? Also when you say a little money, be more specific, there are guys here that can give you a breakdown of how to spend your funds to provide the best results for making your gun as accurate as possible where the only factor left will be you.

Well, thats the only bullet ive shot, now i know do reloads will be a better chance for me, but i dont possess the equipment or the skillset yet to do that. Right now Im at around 3000, between finding the rifle for just over a grand brand new and the S&B scope at 1800, but im sure i could push the limits to 3500 if need be, but that would be max. I don't have any actual 500yd plus single shot training, now I have shot targets at 1200-1300m with a M240B, which isnt exactly the same, but I learned what that type of distance will do to a bullet, machine gun or not.

TPS base - http://swfa.com/Remington-C2732.aspx
or
has a lot of solutions for the Remmy LA
Warne, Talley, TPS, Badger, all great for mounts and rings,
A good trigger will go a long way in reducing group sizes.
You will need to start reloading to really reap the benefits of increase accuracy because you can see what your gun likes. basic lee kits can be had for around a $100, for what you need start.

not yet, i just have those two in mind. I am particular to the Model 700, ever since my moms boyfriend (main father figure to me) bought his Sendero in .300 Win Mag, and taught me how to shoot. I'm still new to this, but it's something that I want to become passionate about, kinda like a life hobby.

If your not set on the 7mm mag there are cheaper rounds to learn with. The Model 700 is a great platform to start with. Getting say the Remington 700 SPS tactical in 223 or 308 would give you a great start to learn to shoot with. I have the 308 and manage sub MOA at 100yds with it all day, Its also alot cheaper to buy rounds for that are factory loaded, the 7mm mag will be a little spendy for over those.
What is the main range and purpose of this gun going to be.

Another suggestion would be to contact a competent smith and contract him to build you a shooter for your price range keeping some aside for optics and mounts.

Good idea on the "custom" route SVT! I'd like to own a Hill Country "Harvester" some day. Although might not be able to swing an $1800 SnB with a $3500 budget.

the best way to start a rifle build is from the stock, rather than the action/barrel, then you can choose it to fit the type of shooting the gun will be used. This was the way things were done when wood figured stocks were the norm. Now days the synthetic rule and the cart gets put infront of the horse. In any case it allows the action to be properly bedded in the stock. The cost of these projects has skyrocketed (3k to 4k) and with the quality of factory built guns today I try one of the top line factories first and if it shoots good-- problem solved. Kimber,Cooper and top line remingtons are first choice here, and have never let me down. Changing the factory stock to Mcmillian may find a better fit for you. 7 mm mag isn't known for the barrel life, but it will depend on how much you shoot. a 7-08 or 280 would be a lot more fun to shoot, especially if you decide to go light wt. Here is everything your post is looking for well within your budget, Alaskan Ti, 280, ay 7 lbs. although a cooper or or kimber would be just as welcome. |

Sorry I don't know a whole lot about building a Remmy.... Now, if ya want a Savage..... Really the basics are the same. determine the type of shooting.
Pick the stock for that discipline.
Put together your choice of action, and get the best trigger assembly for it.
Order a lilja barrel, or one from another reliable maker. Make sure it is an air guaged match quality barrel.
