Ok, as soom of you know I am working on a 300 win mag build, I am getting components together for loading and want some advice, I have my Lee book as well as a hornady now so I am looking more at proven in the field data.  Heres the info for the barrel,

27.5" barrel, 1-10" twist, 1.25 benchrest contour by Douglas.

I imagine with the higher twist its going to like a heavy pill 180gr and above.  I don't plan on taking any game with this gun. only paper and empty water jugs to a max of 500yds until I get comfortable with the gun.  What bullet type and load do you guys use? Question I am going, as I do with all my guns, to try a variety until I find the best.   I would love suggestions for me to start with. Thanks

In my 300 Win Mag A-Bolt Custom Trophy octagonal 26" barrel, 1:10 twist:

Lapua brass + Fed 215M + 75.0 gr RL 22 + 180 gr Accubond + 0.020" off the lands = 1 hole nirvana. Best group so far was 0.437". If I could find the target I'd post a picture.

But this is a hunting load. For paper I would use 180 gr SMK, or 185 gr Berger VLD HPBT for long range targets.

Don't forget to start lower on the powder charge.... for 300 Win, it starts and ends with Reloder 22 in a lot of rifles.

Edit: Can't find Lapua brass any more as it was discontinued, but WW brass is usually plenty good.

RL22 is a great place to start, as mentioned, but I had better results with IMR4350 in a Sako .300 WM and 180gr bullets.

IMR 4831 didn't seem to be a bad place to start for the 180 gr. pills either.

My 300s all love 208-gr. Amax and 190-grain Sierra Match Kings.

I've played with various powders and primers, but find the rifle is more picky of the bullet than the powder, at least in my experience.

My heavy 300 did not like 168- or 175-grain SMKs.

We've had simular results, but as we all know every rifle is different. Our best is with IMR 4350 and 180 gr. Nosler Accubonds. They fragment more on game than we like, but are crazy accurate. I think you would really like what they do to gallon jugs.

I should probably test more than I have but I load 190 SMK  2900 fps with IMR 4350.

since your use is so specific, look at building the gun around sierra 240 smk with a bc. of .710, the 10 twist may need to be changed to faster, but the advantages of shooting that bullet would be worth the effort.

I went from 180 to 190 gr bullets and my 300 loved that.  Pushing it with RL-22 according to the Hornady manual and am moving them @ 2970 (I think, it was over 2900, but I would have to look at my records).  It has been a great load.  That is my hunting load and it works great.

For paper only, I think I would go up to the 208 gr A-max.

Ok I did marks Max overall length test and got restricted by my mag box but not by much.  MOL for use with the mag box is 3.383. and for single shot loading i get 3.494.  Does that sound right?  I pulled some factory ammo and it was 3.298 and the Lee book says that the case should be 3.340.

If you are going to load single shot, let the rifling determine COAL. Manuals show SAMMI specs. For 180's in the 300 WM I would also try H4831 SC as it is almost interchangable weight wise with R22. One of the most accurate loads I've fired through my Winny was 70 grs of IMR-4350 under 180 Nosler BT's. I use Federal 215 to light all fires magnum.
