which of these mounts is better? are they any stronger than a standard ring base combo?

I Have both and love both equally, I'm not sure if they are stronger, but they are simpler and lighter than most combo's - I like to keep it simple, less parts and I like to avoid variable power scopes (when I can) I figure the less parts or moving parts, the less that can go wrong. Now that I think about it, I might like the DNZ's just a bit better!

I prefer the Talley's. Mainly because I prefer a 2-piece base over a 1-piece. Better access to the action. However, on a gun like a Steyr or similar the 1-piece would be ok because it doesn't interfere with access to the action.
