I'm looking on getting a .17 HMR and need a decent scope that will reach out to 200yds. I'm fairly blind at that range and I'm only looking to spend about 200. Any advice????

received BSA sweet 17 and rings from SWFA and Chris Farris II Monday--total package under 120 bucks--reticle and scope are sighted in at 100 yards and adjusts up to 300--so says the info. Pleased with the set up thus far, but I haven't stretched the distance yet.
I had asked the same question last week! This was his recommendation.

Bushnell Elite 3200 3-10x40 $230.00
Vortex Diamondback 3.5-10x50 $230.00
Nikon team Primos 3-9x40 $199.00
I use a Bushnell Banner 3.5-10x36 caibrated for the 17HMR for groundhogs out to 200yds and it does the job fine, just not a big fan of the A/O on it. Any of the 3 mentioned above would blow it away. You never specified if you wanted it for varmints or paper punching but 10x should do the trick. If your eyes are as bad as you say maybe stay clear of the nikon because it only comes in the BDC and could seem too busy to look through.

Will you be shooting at any close range distances... like 15 yds? or just at 100 plus? I ask because if you are planning on shooting close, you might need an Adjustable Objective, which complicates matters a bit. I am also looking for a scope for a .17HMR for my Son. We use it to hunt small game and do need the AO.
Don't know much about it, but Bushnell has a "Legend" scope that is fully multi-coated in 3-9X40AO that SWFA has for $149.95. That might be just the ticket! If you don't shoot close, that Nikon Primos would be a great scope if you don't mind the BDC reticle! |

I have a Burris FFII on my 17 and really like it. I have shot gophers for several years from 10 feet to 250 yards with it. I love that setup. And ballistic reticle makes holdover easy at the longer ranges with the 17. Sometimes I think AO would be nice, but haven't really needed it yet.

Burris Timberline 4.5-14x32 w/ ballistic plex. The ballistic plex works very well with the 17hmr. Prob find one for about 200-220, very good. Has AO also.

oh yea get the Burris signature rings. No lapping required, and no scope marks either.
very good cause the way the adjust allows for better grip. You can also get the offsets to help on the zeroing with using your adjustments as much. watch this http://www.burrisoptics.com/sigrings.html |

What does the Timberline compare to? Is it a rimfire line? How would it compare to the Bushnell "Legend"?

I dont think its a "rimfire". Burris says its for short action rifles, and rimfire is def a short action. It works very well on rimfires. Its not a large heavy scope, rather shorter. Glass is good for the price. The adjustable objective goes as low as 7yards. Perfect for rimfire. It makes a good bench scope. I have taken my squirrel hunting before. I just sat the parallax 40-50 yards and backed the zoom down to 4.5..... perfect. For the features and quality, price wise its a hard one to pass up. The ballistic plex is very nice to. No cranking knobs. Just put the holdover mark on it and boom.
I dont know about the Bushnell Legend. I have never owned any of Bushnell Products. I will say whatever scope you do decide on, the Burris signature rings are GREAT. |
