A little about me and my intended use for a new scope. I am in my late 50's which means my eyesight ain't what she used to be. I am looking for a scope for a new 20 VarTarg that I am putting together. The gun will be heavy barreled for shooting prairie dogs out to 250 yards. I have an 8-32 SIII Sightron on my 6BR and love it. I was looking for a 6-24 Sightron for my new VarTarg but I see the fabulous prices that Chris has on Sightrons. I can buy an 8-32 for only $30 more than a 6-24. 8-32 is probably an overkill for 250 yards but at my age my eyes like more magnification. My question to you is this. Will the low end 8 power to 6 power be a trade off? Will there ever be a scenerio that I will wish I had lower power on the low end? Mirage, etc.? Thanks for any comments.

I don't have any personal experience with this, but what I have read over and over again from guys here that do is that they rarely use over like 16x because of mirage.  If it were me, I'd go with the 6-24 and buy more ammo with the extra $30.00
take em!

Waska, I would stick with the 6-24.  Yes the 8-32 does give you more on the top end, but I have not had a day shooting p-dogs where I could have used that much top end mag, mirage is too much.  When I am shooting them, max mag is 12 - 14 for me.  Starbuck MN?  Have camped at Glacial Lakes State Park a few times.

Thanks guys. I appreciate it. SD- I live on Lake Minnewaska. Actually call Benson my real home. Born and raised there and still work there. Was lucky enough to have grand parents who thought a lake lot in the 1940's would be a good investment. Moved here about 6 years ago. The Norwegians still consider me an immigrant.Wink

Norskys, you betcha ya.  Been through Benson too.  I'm sure your SIII 8-32 is great for a bench gun.  Never shot a VarTarg, but give the ballistics, it look like it shoots fairly flat out to 300 yards.

I have a cheapo 6.5 x 20 that works great, but I rarely need more than 15x unless I'm using it to spot holes at the range out to 200yds. Being saddled with 8x mag at the low end would be a handicap in trying to find your target, IMO, especially for hunting scenarios.

Wiht Sightron SIII scopes the 6-24 is a 50mm and the 8-32 is a 56mm so both will be bright at their lowest power in low light.  The 56 mm will sit a tad higher above the bore of the rifle and quite frankly you already have one so you already know if you like it.  That makes this pretty much a no brainer buy what you like they will both work.   I do find it harder to get onto game under 100 yds at more than 6x but it can be done my grandfather hunted with a fixed 8x weaver for years.
