Yup it has helped my shooting alot. now if I can keep from "bow grabbing" on shots I'll be alright. at 40 yards yesterday I grouped 4 arrows in a 3 inch dot. That an improvment for me at 40. my oldest was doing pretty good at 20 yards. Thats all i'll let him shoot right now. he was doing 3 arrown in the 3 inch dot. i let him shoot the 3d deer a few times and he did good. I'm trying to work on his form. so far he is doing alright. If you have any pointers let me know. I'll pm his pic to you.

I saw a great tip on changing your grip that helped  me a ton.  I'll try to dig up the graphical rep of it and find a link.

His form looked good to me, Brandon.  Like you said, just break him of putting the death grip on the bow.  You might get him a back tension release and make him practice with it most of the time, so he knows what a true surprise release is like, and it maintains good back tension against the wall.  Switch back to the trigger only occasionally, and right before and during hunting season.  In my opinion, there is nothing that will improve your shooting more than using a back tension release.

Thanks Roy,

yeah the back tension releas might be good. I have never used one. I might give it a try for him. He has got in the habit of nosing the string. I guess we all have habits to brake and his must be the grip of death..

That's another benefit of the back tension release.  When you have a true surprise release, it's easier to relax your grip and break the tendency to suddenly grip the bow during the shot, because you aren't anticipating the exact moment the shot will break.  You have fewer things to think about, because you can just concentrate on maintaining your form, aiming, and follow-through.  Your mind doesn't have to think about a trigger, because you are pulling through the release with back tension.  It strengthens all the fundamentals, and ultimately helps you become a more accurate shooter.  You can also shoot a trigger release using the back tension method, but it is more difficult to learn and discipline yourself not to allow your mind to "command" the trigger pull.  This is what leads to target panic, where your mind is saying "NOW" before your form is settled and your bow arm is fighting against your mind wanting you to pull the trigger right when the sight pin crosses the target.  With back tension, you just maintain proper form, let the pin SETTLE on the target, slowly increase back tension, let the shot happen while doing nothing but maintaining form, and follow through.

Get a back tension release.  It is a bit difficult and awkward to learn to use at first, but the rewards will be you will become a better archer faster.  You will thank me later, I promise you.  Get a local archery pro to help you learn how to use it properly and select the one that fits your hand and shooting style best.

Looks like fun the boys and I have several Hoyt and Matthews bows.  Preston used to work at the bow shop here.

Looks like a nice feeling grip!  Rounded in the middle of the palm area and narrow... looks like it would help reduce hand torque.

The grip is okay but feels rubbery and not as stable as I like (wants to move in my hand sometimes). I'm going to get side plates for it when I can find the ones I like or I might try to build me some, can't make my mind up on it or not. That bow still rocks.

Maxxis / Nice piece.  I checked one out when they hit the shop a couple of months ago BUT...I bought the nice pretty Alphamax last spring.

Archery equipment is much like optics.  Did you really know you could spend that much just on arrows!  :)  It just keeps on going.  I have a Bear Truth 2 and a Hoyt AM 32 plus I bought my son a Mission at the same time.  They are both nice pieces so no Maxxis for me this year.  I think the biggest difference that I noticed was how much smoother the let down was probably due to the rollers instead of the nylon guides.

sons new wicked1  bow strings. He is proud of them and can't stop talking about them and the look great too!! I have a few more things to update this bow with i'm just waiting for him to get more comfy with it.

Neat story. I was out shooting last night as always. my wife popped out of the house with my son's dimond edge. The one with blue and orange strings. She say "do you think I can shoot this one"( she has never showed any interest in bows at all ever). I said well lets give it a go and put all my stuff down. I showed her how to put on the release and how to hold the bow.She tryed to pull it back but a little to much for her. I told her to try again and I held the bow from the side and her arm she was pulling back with and it went back easy with my help and she could hold it back. after telling her how to aim and relax and all the other stuff SHE shot 25 times or so and it got dark on us. So now If she still wants to she will be getting her first bow really soon and it will be pink more then likley. just tought it was neat she wanted to do it with out me asking. So now all but my 3 yr old is shooting bows and rifles( but he wants to bad). LIFE IS GOOD!!!!

FANTASTIC!  I really wish my wife would show an interest in archery!

I'VE GOT A GREAT IDEA...  when you get a bow for her, get some images of "Lightning McQueen" and "Mater" of the movie "Cars" film dipped into the riser finish!  That way, it will always remind her of your family's mutually favorite topic.  Subliminally, that will create a Zen-like state of mind, which will then result in improved shooting.  After all, the mental aspect of archery is just as important as the mechanics of proper shooting form, release, and range estimation skills!
