So basically what I am getting at is, do you reccomend using the standard cleaning oil, or just a dry spray lube with teflon as I have heard some using?

Any basic bore solvent that disolves lead will be fine. Hoppies, Shooters Choice, Bore Tech Rimfire Blend all work good. I know quite a few guys that never even clean their RF barrels.

i would assume that even rf's need to be cleaned from time to time. the powder fouling has to occurat some point in time.

I only break my .22 down for a full clean when they start to shoot poor.

So, your saying most don't clean their .22 after they shoot it each time?

I clean my 9mm every time after I shoot it.

I figured this was a good idea for the .22 as well, but let me know if I am wasting my time, and only need to clean it every so often.

It all depends, for what you said you had. A cheap remmy 597, I wouldn't do much other than maybe a good cleaning every 500-1000 rounds. Not after every time.  I only clean my nicer rimfires after ever shoot.  I have a 10/22 that has about 400 rounds through it and no cleaning and it still make one ragged hole at 50yds with the cheapest ammo you can get a walmart.

The reason behind the lack of cleaning regiment is because 22 RF ammo is lead with a wax coating that is left behind in the barrel to protect it. Me, I do a light cleaning after a range session just for S & G. Jacketed ammo is a different story.

Actually with today's ammo, you could clean your 22 every five years if you wanted to.

usually 22 barrels are softer than rifle barrels, marlin in particular, and some of the stiffer brushes can mark the inside. some makers like volquartson recommend little or no cleaning of the barrel, only brushing down the face and the chamber to remove the powder residue. If you do clean the barrel it will take a certain amt. of rounds to get it shooting like it was before. the Mk II I use in long range 22 has 3500 rds of subsonic with only a bolt wipe down and cleaning of the chamber face.

I mainly just wipe down the exterior with an oily rag and occasionally lube moving parts.  I clean the bore ONLY when accuracy starts to suffer.  A .22 rimfire bore doesn't need to be cleaned very often at all.  When I do clean the bore, I use Bore Tech Rimfire, and I only use patches; I never use a brush.  I basically follow the Volquartsen recommendations.

I generally use a Bore Snake with a little Hoppes #9.

My 22/45 likes to be cleaned near the thousand round mark.  That gets all the built up crud out of her. CLP and some JB-bore paste, followed by more CLP.
