What are some good scopes for the 6.5x284? I will be shooting 1,000 yrds.

Well I was doing right well with iron sights the other day with my M1a  at 600yds -- so 1000 yds doesnt sound that far to some of us.

First you want a scope that can be easily adjusted for windage and elevation. At distance wind is a huge factor.

SS10X42M this will work well for you or if you have the budget for it get a Tactical Leupold or Tactical Burris. You will want badger rings with plus 20moa or plus 30moa base at that distance.  The long range Mark 4 Leupold Tactical scopes are the best there is. The Burris is a close second and will focus closer than Leupold and is very bright. But for most guys the $399 SS10X42M is all they care to afford and it will serve them quite adequately.

You don't include a price range so my choice is Night force 8x32. You need to be more specific as to the size of the target.

One mans "GOOD" scope might not be anothers lets start with how much do you want to spend - that will tell us just how far to lead you astray.

My favorite scopes in my safe are Leupold Long Range Tactical Mark 4 in 10x M3  and 8.5 to 25X by 50 M1 illuminated, but if you dont have a professional need for that type of optic buy the Super Sniper you will love how easily it adjusts and how reasonably it is priced.  All of the choices mentioned are good choices but you need to ask what else do I need the rifle to do. Do you need a variable power to use hunting.  Do you need Mil Dot to estimate range or do you have a rangefinder. Do you want a compact or mid size scope or will a large one work for you. The 4.5-14 variables are quite popular with tactical teams. The military usually uses a fixed 10X.  I also have a fixed 20X Super Sniper that works great for paper but it is a bit too much scope for most tactical situations. But If all you will do is shoot paper you might enjoy a higher power scope.

Thanks for the info.  Yes I also shoot the M1A at 1000 for fun.  The scope will be for work and 1000 yrd CMP  KD comp.  I am paid by the state so I would like the best bang for my buck. The cal. will be 6.5X284 I am having it made but don't have it in hand yet so this gives me some time to save.

If it is for "work"  -----   I would put a Leupold Tactical Long Range scope with 30mm tube on it.  Tac Ops recommends the 4.5-14x50. The 4.5-14 with 30mm tube has 100moa internatl adjustment.  If most of your shooting is at distance the 6.5--20 or the 8.5-25 will also work. I have the illuminated Mark4  8.5-25x50. Mine has the mil dot but the TMR that just came out is better and it is worth spending the money for illuminated. Now having said that you also need to give serious consideration to the U.S.Optics SN3 which is better but harder to get and the Nikon Tactical 4-16x50 which is cheaper.  There is a deal on some display models on samplelist

4509 Leupold 8.5-25x50 Mark 4 M1 LR/T Iluminated Click for Picture Matte finish, 30mm tube, side focus parallax, illuminated mil dot reticle, M1 style 1/4 moa windage and elevation, fast focus eye piece, very close to new display model, minor handling wear, missing original box $1,564.00 $1,149.95

LEU60065 Leupold 8.5-25x50 Mark 4 LR/T 30mm Riflescope Leupold 8.5-25x50 Mark 4 LR/T 30mm Riflescope
  • Matte
  • Illuminated Tactical Milling Reticle
  • 30mm
  • Side Focus
  • M1 Target Knobs
  • Free Leupold Flip-Open Lens Covers

The 4.5-14 is a great choice -better for tactical use, the 8.5-25 is still useable for tactical but awesome at the range.

I had one of the Leupold 8.5x25x50mm Mark 4 scopes on my SPR for a while and loved it.

I'm an old geezer that does Customer Service and Technical Support for an ultra high quality scope ring manufacturer. I earn my living playing with rings, bases and good hi quality scopes. I'm very fortunate in that a lot of the hi end glass I play with is on loan from manufactures and only costs me a little of my time and a truck load of my own ammo. I have what most gun lovers would consider the best job on Earth. (The rifles and Super Sniper scopes all belong to me).

You may want to check on how difficult it will be to mount a scope on the M1a some people have complained it is difficult to get the scope mounted and sighted in because of position.

Thank you Ron...

Me being originally form Florida, I can appreciate the Gator. It's way better than that fire bug or some of those sock monsters you had earlier. As for the glass... NF and S&B are top end stuff that most of us will only dream about having. I had the opportunity of using a Night Force Scope and think it's among the very best out there. My Super Sniper may not be as clear or made of steel, but it's every bit as accurate under normal conditions. Not to mention it's a thousand bucks cheaper.

God, I love this stuff and only wish I had more time to play with it.

(Seeing as how we have revived a 2005 scope inquiry we might as well have some fun with it and who knows we may eaven hear what scope COPPER ultimately bought and how he likes it.)

Well done there and welcome CavscoutSniper - Thanks for your service.  I would  expect some success with U.S. Optics scopes as well although they are harder to come by.
