Hey guys, looking for a good scope.  Not wanting to spend more than $350 ish but would rather get it right the first time.
This is my first varmint rifle, living in PA dont have too many real long shots.  Currently on active duty status so may end up out west.

What is the best scope bang for buck?
thanks

how much magnification do you want??
you can get a 4x12 vortex diamondback for less than $300 from swfa.

To be honest I have never heard of Vortex before are they fairly reliable?

I saw that the Crossfire 6-24X50 was on sale for $99.00 70% off reg. price.
Simmons Aetec Master series 4-14X44 is going for $149.99. They any good?

Just looking for a good scope that wont leave me feeling violated.
Never shot the .17 Rem fireball but heard its flat and long so the ability to shoot long is possible.

i have a vortex viper on my .375H&H its held up just fine. ive used the 3x9 diamondback on my .22-250 before and it was just fine.

you could also look at the bushnell 3200 elite in 3x10 4x12 and 5x15 all under $350

I have had the 6-24x50 Crossfire for about a year. I use it a lot in low light for shooting vermin. It has proven to be reliable on a heavy kicking spring gun. The glass is also very good, far better than the price suggests. If you have use for that power range it is a great buy.

Don't be scared of Vortex. They make a good scope and are really reasonable. I've got 2 of them and have 2 more on back-order. I've never needed their customer service, but nobody that has needed it has had any trouble with them.

I've got that  simmons and it's not too bad actually, but it's well short of the Burris Timberline series and the Vortex Diamondback series. The Nikon team Primos is another alternative that is a good value if you can deal with the busy cross hairs.

For the money and what you're looking to do I'd consider any of these.

http://swfa.com/Burris-3-9x32-Timberline-Rifle-Scope-P11002.aspx

http://swfa.com/Vortex-4-12x40-Diamondback-Rifle-Scope-P11238.aspx

http://swfa.com/Nikon-3-9x40-Team-Primos-Riflescope-P47059.aspx

http://swfa.com/Sightron-3-12x42-SII-Riflescope-P40517.aspx

None of the above would be considered a waste of money. I think the Burris is the best buy out there at the moment on sale for $120 and I have that Diamondback on a .308 auto loader and it's a really good scope. The team primos is the same optically as the older Monarch series, and that Sightron is really nice. "buddy has one on a .270 and it's NICE"

Appreciate your service, and Welcome

If God didn't want me to play with it, he'd of made my arms shorter.

Bushnell 4-16x40 Elite 4200 Rifle Scope Multi-X Bushnell 4-16x40 Elite 4200 Rifle Scope
Stock # - 424164SF
  • Matte
  • Multi-X
  • 1"
  • Rainguard
  • Side Focus
  • Free Fleece Pullover (Mail-In Coupon)
$419.95
The Bushnell 4200 series has very nice glass and the 3-9x40 is a bargain but I really like this scope you give up one power on the low end to gain 7 more on the high end which seems to me to be a good trade off.   The 17 is an interesting choice and is very popular with some coyote hunters as it does not exit and if fur friendly however any bullet that light is easily blown around in the wind and that is a really small hole and would get dirty pretty quickly I would think.  The ammo for a 17 is rather hard to find as are components if you  reload.  Im rather surprised you did not go with a .223 just for ease of locating ammo.

The Fireball does not foul up much at all, i have a .17 Fireball topped with a Nikon 4.5-14x40 Buckmaster mil dot.(groundhog rig)I don't shoot much more than 200m or so,i'm more than happy with the set up.

Are you having ammo availability issues or can you find it.  I went in Scheels looking for ammo and brass etc and there was very very little to be had so I pretty much wrote it off as a bad choice and went back to looking at .223 and 22-250

Bummer.  Ours is actually stocking powder in 8lb cans again.  Kind of nice.

Edit for grammar.

the one in fargo has 8#ers too, but there selection of brass is virtually nonexistent. the gun show on the first weekend of january is a great place for buying new brass though.
