hi guys how many of you out there have a 22/250 with a fast twist barrel to push heaiver bullets ?
i no most 22/250 rifles are a 1 in 14 twist but some are 1 in 12.
but have any of you got a 1 in 9 or 1 in 8 twist. ? someone i speak to on a different forum has got a 1 in 9 pushing 75 grain vmax at 3300 ish fps so it offers good bc for a 22 cal rifle.
and he said its dead accurate and great for long range varmints. now this has got me intrested tohave mine changed in the future.
would the 1 in 9 still be able to push the 50 to 55 grain bullets accurately still ?
i

overspin could be an issue at those speeds with that light of a weight of projectile. of course this is pure speculation on my part.

Problem with using 75gr or heavier in swifts and 250's is why not just use a 6mm in 87. The powder capacity is about the same and barrel life would be somewhat longer. Velocity is about the same for the 87 as you are using for the 75 in 22. Faster twist rates with lighter bullets really don't cause problems, if they aren't accurate its just like any other combination, its just not accurate. The bullet still takes 7 inches of travel for one rev. as opposed to say 12 inches, and completes the same number of rev. in a relative shorter distance. Its that trying to get the same velocity from a 1 in 7 inch vs. a 1 in 12 inch will be more difficult. The fast twist 22's I have and use seem not to like secant ogives. |

a lad i no cant get over 3300 from his 6 br pushing the 75 grain bullet. and he has a 24 inch barrel. to get that speed he would have to go longer.
my mates 22/250 with 1 in9 is doing over this speed with a 24 inch barrel. as for grouping its sopt on and with the amax overs a superb bc

bc difference is only .035 which wouldn't be noticable in most shooting and a reg. 6mm will easily get 3300 fps with Hybrid.

I ran a pair of 22-250's with 1:8 and 1:9 barrels.
The amax is a decent bullet bt the 80 grain Sieera at 3000 fps will out shoot it close and far, and is much better in the wind.
Barrel life is going to be between 400 and 1000 rounds with this set up. It's very hard on barrels with that much powder going through a small 22 cal hole.
The 6-250 is a better choice for bullet selectionas well as barrel life. You can push 107's to 2800 fps and have stellar accuracy at distance.
You can look at the 1:7 223 remington with 80 grain ssierras. 66% of the powder charge and still 2900 fps easy. Accuracy is phenominal and it's fully 1000 yard capable at 31.5 moa
and barrel life is increased to about 2500 rounds.

I have a 1-9 twist .22-250.
It will shoot 40g Hornady V Max's, all 50 grain to 60 grain, and 68 grain Hornady bthp's extremely well. The 40 grain Hornady V Max bullets get about 4000 fps and shoot well under 1 moa (RS TAC, Varget, Re 10x). The 68 grain H bthp get about 3200 fps and sometimes land in the same hole (H4350 & RS Hunter)
I tried the 75 grain Hornady AMax bullets but they would only shoot poor to really bad groups depending on temp. and elevation (like up in the mountains).
I shoot the 68 grain H bthp almost all the time and have found it adequate up to 500 yds -- if I want more I have a 1-8 twist .243 Win that shoots the 105 grain Hornady Amax really well.
Yes, barrel life is not so good but I have another 1-10 twist .22-250 (15 years old) that gets slightly over 1 moa with the 40 grain VMax and TAC & Re 10X with almost 5,000 rounds through it -- good enough for any varmint on the planet. The throat looks real rough but it keeps on shooting.

My 22/250 has a 8" twist ,I shot a lot of 77gr Sierra TMK and plenty of 55gr bullets. Barrel was completly shot out after maybe a 1,000 rounds. I'm leaving for MT next week for prarie dogs, and my 22/250 is staying home. I think next bbl with be a 12" twist.
