While prone do you guys pre-load on your bipods or not and what are the benefits if any? By pre-load I mean apply forward pressure so the bipods leg springs add resistance.

On a bench or prone from the ground, I don't allow any forward pressure on my bipod. In fact some guys actually get the gun into shoulder position with the bipod off the ground and then let it drop down and rest so they dont' pull it closer or push into it after the bipod is supporting the weight. |

preloading is only possible with certain types of bipods, harris in particular can benefit from this technique depending on the shot, sako pods , atlas and others don't allow this because of design, sometimes if you need to swiing the rifle thru an arc for rapid shots placing a upside down frisby under the bipod works well.

Should add that sometimes the harris is "turned around" so the legs can be flipped down with the left hand in one movement, while the rifle is held by the grip. |

I do pre-load my bi-pod. It helps tame the muzzle climb of my light pencil barreled .300 WSM. It does not totally take it away, but does help.

If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

I'll add my 0.02c here. If you're shooting from just a shooting bench I wouldn't recommend getting one of the Harris swivel models. The Harris I got is the S-BRM model and the gun i've got it attached to is a heavy barrel varmint rifle and it keeps leaning to either side because of the weight of the barrel when i'm not holding it. I've tightened the knurled knob as much as I can with my fingers. Can't get a Podlock over here (yet!).

Well, the web-based Australian retailer (that is connected to a certain U.S. web retailer ) that can get me stuff from the States doesn't have that item for sale on their website...may need to fire off an email to see what they can do. Edited by The Apostle - August/30/2010 at 02:46 |

Due to breakages in the plastic lever they discontinued a bit until moulds were made for a new type using the same type of reinforced plastic used in glocks, probably no more than a couple of weeks.

Ah so.
Should a guy wait for the "new type" lever models? I just break $hit a lot.
Thanks, Dale.

either way, my understanding is that the lever will sold seperately for those who want to retro.

I always am told I mount my Bi-pods in reverse or backwards...
I will tell you this it is what i prefer...I want to hold back on a distance shot not push forward...
I however prefer in reverse once I am shooting I back off three turns and switch the direction just because I do not want to have to answer questions if anyone else is present...
I again hold the rifle into my shoulder and then release rather than moving or pushing or leaning or steadying forward...
Even if shooting sub loads with no recoil I tend to do my shooting on the up stroke so to speak... Edited by 338LAPUASLAP - September/12/2010 at 08:10 |

Hmm, I might have to try that. I had better results at the range today
by not trying to load the bipod at all (can't really - as I referred to
in another post- I'm shooting off smooth concrete). Instead, I focused
on getting a good, relaxed position centered behind the rifle, got my
left hand back under the butt to steady it and shot on the down-cycle in
my breathing. That worked quite well.
338, you really don't have enough rifles around. |

I put my bipod on in reverse as well. Just always made more sense to me.
