Go to their website, it says in 2006 Leupold will eclipse everything we
know about riflescopes. It is a flash player at the beginning. it
doesnt say what it is they are talking about??? CHRIS ANY IDEAS? Maybe
the VX-3 isnt selling enough???

I think the VX III is a good scope BUT there are just as good or even slightly better scopes then the VXIII for the same or even less money.
I think many of sportsman have figured that out and the lock down that Leupold had in the past isnt quite as comfortable as it once was.
If Leupold wants to stay on the top they need to come out with a scope that will surpass others on the market to justify the higher price or lower their prices to compete with optics of equal quality at the same lower price.

I'm betting they are going digital, The rear ocular will be a low out put LCD with a cross hair. Chips are fast enough now and the redraw will be hardly noticable. Magnification will no longer use an erector set but digital enhancement which allows wavelet edge contour enhancement thus improving resolution thru the 20 to 30 power range. The scope will be about 1/2 the lengthof a V3 but look more like a long EOtech. (or a miniture Alcan or what ever they are called). A small program will allow you to dial in your load combinations which will automatically reset a ballistic drop compensator in the main screen. And the price will right.

Maybe they found Rain-X at Pep Boys and are now going toe to toe with Bushnell? |

They would have to improve the optics if they want to go toe to toe with the 4200 Elite

I just got off the phone with Leupold's tech support and I asked them about this "eclipse " deal. They said that it is a new line of scopes that will have a 50mm objective, yet it will still fit on low rings without clearance issues. This, supposedly, is due to the objective being shaped somewhat like an "eclipse' or a cresent moon, creating the clearance. The tech guy said they'll be out "the first of the year" (couldn't pin him down any further), and that they will be available in some, but not all the product lines. I did ask if it will be available in a VX-III, and he said yes. Sounds like a odd-looking scope, but he insisted it is a big improvement...guess we'll see...

Now that looks interesting. Kind of looks like a Bat Scope, this come off the Batman gun LOL Hopefully, the price will come down a little and then Leupold can be considered in the price range of Burris, Bushnell, Weaver, Pentax for the same optical quality.

I already commented on another post about the VXL. At $699.95 and more weight to lug around just who is going to buy one of these as a hunting scope???? Sometimes I get accused of Leuppy bashing, from friends and hunting buddies which I think is an unfair accessment because I like their scopes and I like the fact that it is an American company. BUT this is not 1965 and there are plety of other good quality scopes out there for a lot less money.

Agree 100%
I wish they were priced like bushnell or had glass of the same quality of the Conquest. |

I personaly don't see how a 50mm objective lens with a big chunk missing out of it, is going to offer any advantage over a 40mm scope. Surely if you look at the overall lens area, it can't be much more than a 40mm. Seeing as you can mount the 40mm lower, and it's a lot cheaper. Why bother wasting your hard earned cash. Things must be slow at Leupold if they have to resort to gimmicks, to try make some money.
