I'm putting together a rem700 SPS Tactical in .308
I'm pretty set on the super sniper 10x42 but I'm not sure if I should go with the 16x instead. I've got hunting rifles but the glass and rifles were already together when given/passed down to me so choosing my own scope is a new endeavor. I'd like to be able to shoot 600+ yards on occasion but I know most of the time it'll be less, if for no other reason, the piney woods around here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. |

10x will be much more usable. I ran a 10x and a 16x on my sps tactical for a little while but settled on the 3-9SS as the clear best.

I would stay with the 10x. You can shoot out well past 600 with 10x. The 3-9 SS is a great scope. I love mine. If they make a 3-12 or 4-16, that will replace my setups on my other guns.

Nope. I actually just ordered the 10X for my Savage 10FCP-K in .308
Most scopes won't be mil/mil from what I have seen, not on the lower price spectrum at least.

I'd like that one but it's a smidge out of the budget. This rifle is yet another "getting-out-of-the-military" present to myself so I can be too outrageous. Everything I've read about the SS 10x42 has been rave reviews so I think it will be great for a first time long ranger. |

Get the 10X. Doing mil/MOA isn't as simple as mil/mil, but it is doable.
Anything else in the price range will not be nearly as good. |

For a .308 bolt gun, I'd really take a hard look again at the SS 3-9X. I reviewed one (mounted it on my similar LTR) and you cannot get a better scope than that for the price. Anyway, as far as your original question goes, 16X fixed is just too much and will greatly limit the versatility of this rifle. Consider that you've made a good choice in your platform so really a decent scope and keeping up your shooting skills and what more do you need besides plenty of ammo?
