Last night's CNBC hatchet job aside, what is everyone's opinion of the Remington Model 700 CDL.  My Tikka and Savage left hand options have faded away but I can get a 700 CDL .243 in left hand as we speak.

I don't want to get into the legal aspects or trigger design problems of the past here. All 700s come with the X Mark Pro single stage trigger now, and supposedly trigger design problems have been corrected. But I would appreciate opinions of this gun in general over it's long history. I can get this rifle for a little over $800--good deal I'll be happy with for a good long while, or should I keep looking?

Thanks

I don't have a problem with Remington rifles of any make. That being said, Savage has always offer more bang for the buck for me. Why can't you get a lefty in a Savage or or a Tikka?
If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

For whatever reason, none of the local stores stock left handed Tikkas or Savages. Every once in a while, and I mean maybe two or three times a year, Sportsman's Warehouse will get a l/h Tikka T3 Lite, but it's either a .270 wsm or .300 wsm. One local gun store will special order anything you want in left hand but will charge $40-$50 more than the exact same right hand gun sitting on their shelf. That ticks me off greatly and I swore never to go there again.

Our Walmart, of all places, will special order anything in their catalog, usually at considerably less than other gun stores. But they don't have Tikkas in their catalog and the Savage that I wanted is out of stock with none on the horizon. But their distributor does have a Remington Model 700 CDL Left Hand .243 just waiting for me to order it, so I have fallen back to it as third, but available, choice.

IMO, the CDL is what the original BDL should have been from the start. I was never a fan of the Monte Carlo hump and much prefer the straight comb with raised cheek piece.

The CDL/CDL SF are the best looking Remingtons in IMO.

I have a CDL in 270 and have had it for several years. Mine shoots about 1" with a variety of loads if I do my part and it's srictly stock. The only thing I have had done to it is when I got it the previous owner had mickeyed with the trigger adjustments and had them all messed up. I tried to correct it but wasn't comfortable so I took it to a Remington service center and the guy there fixed it up with a wonderful crisp 3.5 lb trigger. To be honest I can't say how it will do over long shot strings as the barrel heats up as I never see the need to just bang away over 3 shot groups. So my overall opinion is it is one of the prettiest factory rifles out there and handles the way a fine rifle should. It light but but not too much so . It's well balanced, the bolt is smooth and overall My experience with 700's (I've had about 6-8 over the past 30 years)is they are generally very accurate and reliable . Try it I think you'll be happy.

Hello,
I do some digital work for Remington. In case anyone was curious, I thought you might want to check out Remington's response to CNBC's program: http://www.remington700.tv
Best,

I have a CDL SF in 300 WSM that had a little tune up, I had the stock glass bedded, installed a rifle Basix trigger adjusted to 3 lbs and the barrel free floated. It shoots Federal 180 gr Barnes Triple-Shock X bullets at a bit over half inch and also shoots 180 gr AuccuBond's at about three quarters of an inch at 100 yards. The only thing I regret is the Rifle Basix trigger. My smith told me that you can't adjust the X Mark Pro triggers which I have since learned is pure BS. I have an X Mark Pro on another 700 in 223 that has been adjusted to about 2.5 lbs or so and while not as nice as the Rifle Basix it is still a very good trigger.

Thanks for all the input.  I ordered the 700 CDL today.

Now I'm looking for a good mount and rings combo.  Any suggestions?

Yup, that is pure BS. As a matter of fact you can get lighter weight springs for the X-Mark to drop the pull weight safely in the 2 lb range. Pretty sure Brownell's sells them.
