Just another review of the Vortex crossfire, first impressions were solid, clear for the money and pretty positive clicks.
Finally had a chance to mount one of the two scopes I bought, mounted it on a varmint AR, zeroed the scope in about 5 shots and began punchin holes, at around 25 rounds, the shots started drifting, and continued to get worse, after taking a step back, noticed the rear glass in the scope was tilted and falling out so to speak, what a shame, definately not the "bargain" everyone was raving about, complete disgust and a wave of emotions I cannot speak of on the day of the failure.
I contacted customer service, they gave me a prepaid label and I sent it back, told them how I was not really interested in that line of scope after having it fail the first time out, they told me the price to upgrade to a "good scope", and that is where it ended, after having the failure with the first scope, I was too scared to upgrade and throw more money away, and no matter what anyone says, I will not purchase another scope of any kind from this company, I can say I learned my lesson, I will spend the money for a good quality scope from another major brand, this is just my experience, trying to get the some feedback out there, I saw nothing but good about these scopes and I bit thinking they were the deal of the year, I know the customer service is second to none with this company, but I do not want to deal with customer service, I want to use my rifle with no worries of the scope failing and thats all I would ever do with this brand of scope.

your assuming way to much. the vortex crossfire line is a budget line. It doesnt condem the rest of the lines. i had a similar experience the same model crossfire. upgraded to the viper and it is by far worth it. Anyone that wants to "use" something without worry needs to be ready to spend without consequence. Expecting a 100 dollar scope to perform with no issues is expecting a lot

While it is true the market is not always limited to "you get what you pay for", it IS the norm... kind of like "the race is not always to the swift, the battle to the strong... but that's the way to bet". I have had great success, some say more than one person is supposed to have, with some pretty low dollar scopes. Let me say HOWEVER, those are not primary scopes I use for hunting. Doesn't mean I haven't hunted with them, but I have not done it much and have almost always had a backup with me. I don't bet a hunt, or my life, on them. I have never been "concerned" that they would fail, or would not have gone hunting with them, but have not neglected the possibilities. Are my low dollar scopes "more likely" to experience problems than my high dollar scopes. Absolutely... but then again, I never discount the possibility that one of those expensive scopes could fail, too. I do depend on the more expensive scopes to perform. I never depend on the cheaper scopes to perform. But just because a scope fails it doesn't mean the entire brand should be condemned as worthless. I have on occasion invested some time and effort in finding (shipping back and forth) one of the cheap scopes that actually works. The high dollar scopes will not always perform right out of the box, the cheap scopes will not always let you down... but that's the way to bet.Edited by Kickboxer - October/27/2010 at 19:57 |

I wasn't expecting the world's greatest scope, however from the reviews posted I did expect a decent "budget" scope that was reliable, it was mounted and failed some 25 rounds later, 25 rounds and the scope failed miserably, I have a cheap sweet .223 on another rig and it has 150+ rounds and a number of hunts on its belt, its not the clearest of scopes but I can see and it has held zero no problems.
This scope was advertised as a 70% off deal exclusive through SWFA so I thought I was getting an entry level scope from a quality company, with positive reviews and not one really bad review at that time and waited almost 3 months to get it, now if you search, that scope has some bad reviews popping up around on other boards, again I know that 99.00 is nothing in the grand scheme of scopes and I was not expecting to look through a monarch, elite, zeiss, etc.. I was hoping to get a decent scope for a great price, I did not, all I am doing is putting that out there so that others have the opportunity to weigh the options when trying to decide.
And honestly if it was you out there first day new scope and it failed, you would go pay more for another scope from the same manufacturer? You are a better man than I, or you have alot of extra cash around.

I really feel for the folks who got totally hosed spending $199 on that scope. I bought 2 and one has already failed "reticle is now an X rather than a cross" on a .17 hm2 bolt gun. Mounted the other and it hasn't failed yet. Yes it is their bargain model, but so is the Conquest. Had I known I'd of canceled while I was waiting on back order.

no we just realize that companies make different levels of scopes buy from the bottom and get what they provide, buy a better "tier" and you get a better scope

ever consider that you were the small math percentage exception? No product is 100% quality control, it would be more expensive to do this than it would be to replace scopes for free with a 98% quality. I don't see why you wouldn't send it back in exchange for a proper replacement unless you are just being stubborn. You can read more here about great customer service and the companys very small percentage of returns they have had with this model.

I've got 2 diamondbacks that have been good scopes so far. "neither have seen 100 rounds yet as they are on hunting rifles"

maybe you should just send it back to SWFA and then get something else, apparently you won't be happy with any vortex

Again guys I am not bashing I am simply stating my experience and agree I just might be one of the unlucky ones, and given the price of the scope I am sure that there are a ton of these out there considering I waited 3 months to recieve mine, simply put I had a bad experience with this brand and I will shop elsewhere for my next scope, kind like the whole my first car was a (fill in the blank) and I will never own one again, everyone has had it happen to them in some form, I will be receiving a replacement directly through vortex and will be selling it along with the other one I bought at the same time, I do not care to waste my time or ammunition testing the reliablity of a scope. And yes I know that means spending more money on a "better scope" that may or may not be a lemon as well.

Understandable, we all have reasons be it rational or not. Since you don't plan to use it how cheap do you want to get rid of it for? I'll throw the dice see if its a winner. |

I think that Fredfrankbob has had a bad experience, reported fairly on it and came to his own conclusions regarding future purchases. To bash him for this or to defend Vortex is being biased in my opinion. If I bought any line scope (budget or top) and it failed me like that with parts falling off, I would throw it back at the company and not buy the same again.
Vortex are doing themselves a disfavour by putting a budget line on the market if they wish to be in the top end as well.
They should market their budget scope under a different brand (marketing 101).
Or leave it to China to make them.

After hearing this, I am glad I changed my order from the Crossfire to the Viper before it shipped but don’t all Vortex lines have the lifetime warranty? Sure I would be disappointed if I had the same experience but I would give them a chance to make good on their warranty. Hopefully the Vortex reps get on the horn with the factory and ask them to step up the QC on these scopes. I was considering ordering one in the near future and this complaint has pretty much turned me off from purchasing the Crossfire but, having said this, I am still considering purchasing another vortex in the future, just probably not a Crossfire. |

I am one who has made postive comments on this scope. Mine has spent a good amount of time on a heavy kicking spring gun with no problems. I intend to keep using it on springers.
I didn't expect much for the price and have thus far been surprised. Like a lot of scopes here, especially lower cost ones, variances do occur.

Ok all, just so you understand, in order for me to upgade and "replace" the scope I bought, when I talked to customer service, including the price that I paid for the crossfire, it would cost me at least 3x the original price to have a 6-24x50 to my door for a viper and there goes my budget rifle... To answer some of the other questions, yes the crossfire has a lifetime warranty, and yes the customer service department is excellent.
I agree with what 8shots said, they screwed up tieing the vortex name to this particular scope, had I known the problems they may or may not have I would not have chanced it at all, and unfortunately people are swayed by things like this, both of my buddies that were with me gave me that look when they saw this scope fail, they will never deal with this brand either.
It is no secret, I am a bargain shopper, I look for a good deal for a great price because I own more than a few rifles and honestly I do not need to see a deer in high definition to shoot one, I do own a few nice scope for my big game rifles, but haven't surpassed the 400.00 mark to equip an optic on anything I own.
And lastly, you guys are saying jump u,p jump up, upgrade to a viper, again not what I intended to do from the word go, if I was looking to spend 400-500 for a scope, I would have went a different route from the start.

how much
Really what we have here is the Crossfire made in china, while the higher quality Viper line is made in Japan. With quality comes expense, thus higher price. in the previous link i provided even the viper reps admitted it wouldn't be a possibility if the crossfire line were made anywhere else, costs would be too high. Vortex does everything they can from a management standpoint to make things right for the consumer. So take it as it is, we could either have it on the market or not have it at all. In your continued search for a better scope, you're probably going to find you WILL need to at least spend that $400 mark if what you're really after is a quality high magnification variable scope. |
