I need a system that I can use for night hunting up to 100yards. I'm using a rim fire rifle to control some pests. I know personally in my existing collection, my Zeiss conquest has without a doubt the best glass for this application. I suppose the ultimate scope would be something with similar quality glass in maybe a 4x fixed and a massive objective lens. Maybe a lit reticle or a laser attachment (never used either).
Anyhow. Feel free to add your opinions |

Look at the Trijicon Accupoints. They are probably your best bet for night use. Heres a decent one for a rimfire:
They arent cheap, but like most things, you get what you pay for.

I was looking at that one, however wouldn't it be better with a larger lens? and how does the glass stack up against the German stuff?

OK. So here are some scopes that I am considering.
http://swfa.com/IOR-4x32-Hunting-Rifle-Scope-P6742.aspx http://swfa.com/Zeiss-3-9x50-Conquest-Rifle-Scope-P5416.aspx http://swfa.com/Meopta-3-10x50-Meostar-R1-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P8005.aspx http://swfa.com/Burris-35-10x50-Fullfield-30-European-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P10993.aspx http://swfa.com/Trijicon-3-9x40-Accu-Point-Rifle-Scope-P12873.aspx Word on the street is that the first 3 buy their glass from the same place. BS aside, rank these by glass clarity. Maybe Im going about this the wrong way. Non of these have exactly what I want. Theyre either too much of something or too little of something. I was looking at Laser Genetics stuff but Im not sure if Im sold on it. Kinda feel like a surefire would do the same thing. |

A surefire won't do what the Laser Genetics will do. Several of the regulars here use them and have had good things to say about them.
If night hunting is your thing you need an Illumiated reticle. Trijicon is the best at that. If you are considering the laser genetics then get a red reticle as it will contrast well. Also the 2.5-10x will offer you a better low light image than the 3-9x. But at the cost of added weight. Trijicon glass is pretty close to conquest glass. IOR, Meopta and Zeiss all will be pretty comparable as well. I have had a bunch of IORs, I have a Meopta and a Trijicon and they are all great scopes with great optics. But for low light Trijicon will dominate the others. Meoptas (at least mine) has a very very fine reticle that is not suited well for low light. Edited by supertool73 - November/17/2010 at 16:32 |

I have tried most of the 1-4s with 20 and 24mm objectives (including the trijicon tr24)
the latter is a GREAT scope but for night use, the small objective is flat out not as good as a bigger objective given a similiar level of glass quality |

I beleive the IOR is Chez. glass & the Conquest is farmed out to Meopta. All great glass, but I think the IOR is a tad better glass wise & the Conquest is a tad better mechanically.
Maybe Illya will chime in to clear the air on that question.

Thank all for the good info. How does the Burris Euro glass compare to the German stuff? Its the best bang for the buck. And is Trijicon glass better or worse?

Fyi a scope on 4 power with a 24mm objective lens is the same as a scope on 10 power with a 60mm obj lens. With the lower powers a big objective bell isn't needed to acheive the same amount of light transmission. Even a 3-9x40 on 7 power and below would be virtually the same as a 2.5-10X56 as far as transmitting light, and it would keep the weight down a little.

My brother has the Meopta-3-10x50-Meostar-R1 with a 4A reticle on a night time predator rig. It is an outstanding scope for low light. The glass is great and combined with the easy to see reticle, I have yet to see something better in the price range.

I have a trijicon accupoint 2.5-10x56 and it does great in low light. The glass is very good and I have found it to be my go to optic/rifle for low light shooting. On thing I have found is most optic companies that make illuminated reticles make the lowest setting to bright and at night it washes out. With the Accupoints you can cover or partial cover the fiber optics to adjust to the light level if needed. Unless a scope is designed to be night vision compatible I generally find them to bright at night. |

Although I appreciate the response, it seems like this has left me with more questions then answers. I like zeiss glass, but theres no lit reticle.... trijicon seems to have everything but it costs more... no one has responded to the burris yet. What about if I opted for night vision at this price range?

My brother also has the 3-9x50 Conquest. The biggest difference between that and the Meopta is the R1 has the far better low light 4A reticle.
I can't help you with the other scopes on your list except a general statement on the FF. The Burris FF scopes I have are very good for the money. Their optics are not in the same league as the Meopta or Conquest.
The bottom line for shooting in the dark for me, some type of illumination is required.
Here is a fine example http://swfa.com/Laser-Genetics-ND-3-Laser-Designator-P41090.aspx
That's all I can say about the scopes on your list.

A smaller object does not gather the same amount of light as a larger object. And it does not have the same resolving ability either. But it may present the same surface brightness of a viewed object depending on the magnification used on both of the different sized objectives.
