at one time i would have said reminton 700, but the last few rifles i have bought have been savages i jus bought a savage 112 bvtss 25-06, its sub moa with factory ammo,i also bought a savage model 12 204 its a tack driver to say the least it shoots same hole at 200 yds, thats my zero. both of these guns are the hvy bbl.  guns and i cant complain. i have shot the cheaper savages and they shoot great.the marlin xs7 and xl7 shoot really good. the howas shoot really good.the stevens 200 shoot really good.no complaints about the tikkas either. its mostly personal preference and what feels good in your hands. the model 70s are just flat out shooters but prolly out of your price range, you may look at the t/c venture they shoot really good, 1 moa out of box

No doubt some of each brand have slipped out of the factory (by mistake) that would shoot a decent group but your odds go way up of having a good one with Tikka and Savage and likely the weatherby / howa.  The remmington guns can be made to shoot very well but they dont always start there. Your odds go up with the heavy barrel guns being shooters as well but the lightweight Tikka will run with the best of heavy barrel guns and the extractor is as good as you can get.

I really like my Vanguard and heck with the close outs you could get one with a vortex or burris and buy ammo too.

I have a Tikka T3 SS with synthetic stock. Just like everybody says light, accurate, the smoothest action you can find and trigger is crisp and adjustable. I bought another one used about a year ago in 300WSM. I would have a hard time buying anything else. There are many good choices it comes down to personal preference.

I passed up a Vanguard in 300 Weatherby Mag and have REGRETTED it almost every day.  WalMart had it on sale for $300.00.  I came back the next day to get it, and it was gone.  I KNEW to not wait, but did.  Dumb, really dumb.  I've not known anyone who has one who has not been very happy with it.

Wish I could find one for a good price...

For a fiend of mine who HAD one,the deciding factor was the cheap synthetic stock.  Told him it could be replaced eventually but....................................................it's history.  I sighted it in for him and honestly didn't think the stock was THAT bad.  Noisy maybe.

A few years back I was in Wal Mart around midnight and saw a Vanguard in .270 marked down to $150.  It was their last one, and this Wal Mart was going to quit selling guns.  They wouldn't sell it to me, saying I had to come back at something like 4 or 5 AM.  I went back 15 minutes before the time they told me, and someone else was already filling out the paperwork.  That one will always haunt me.  The only consolation I can take from the situation was that at least I didn't have to own a stinking .270...

I wish I'd known you were looking for one! I was going to sell my Vanguard Backcountry for $400 before I traded it off. It just happened to be in .300 Wby too. Where were you when I posted it in the mafia section? Now I'm sad.

Well, here is what it looked like.
It didn't shoot too bad either, as long as you kept to 3 shot groups. After that, the light fluted barrel started to walk a bit.

Still cannot get the whole Tikka thing.  I have one, but find the wood cheap looking, the cast receiver with the small port a pain to remove a case with my fingers if I do not cycle the bolt with enough energy (at the range) and the plastic magazine to be cheap also.  The accuracy is ok.  Overall, it just appears to be a cheap looking rifle.  The bolt is smooth and the trigger is good.  The Vanguard and Howa rifles on the other hand are quite the opposite.  The triggers could use some improvement, but they have never affected the sub moa accuracy on none of the rifles that I own and none are the sub moa versions.  I have two Howas, 270 and 300 win mag.

Ever consider a Stevens 200?  They are basically a clone of Savage 11s without the Accutrigger and are cheaper.

Got mine for $300, which would leave you $300+/- to put some quality mounts, rings and glass on it.

Can't speak for ALL Stevens 200s, but mine HATES premium ammo (Hornady SST, at least, was all over the target) but shoots the cheaper stuff, such as Remington 130gr Pointed Soft Point Core-Lokt ammo VERY well.

Even without the Accutrigger and EXTENSIVE range time, I am able to consistently shoot 1-1.5" groupings @100 yards, which is DEADLY even at 300 yards, and I came in at under $600 for my rig.

The stock is very light weight and feels cheap and I'm not going to lie...the lightweight design of the Stevens 200 = pretty serious recoil for a non-magnum caliber, but that doesn't bother me at all...just thought I would throw that out there.

Good luck with your search!

Tikka T3.  Lightweight, adjustable trigger, 1MOA accuracy out of the box, rings included.  You won't regret it.  .270 is my favorite caliber
