I would go with the 300 WSM as well.  It will do all the 30-06 does just a little better, plus it is a short action which is always nice.

Santa brought me this.  Browning Mountain TI in 300 WSM, with the scope it is right around 7lbs.

Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

300 WSM.  It is enough of a step up from a .270 in performance to see a difference and you don't have the issue of mixing ammo.  However, more than a few elk have succumb to a .270 and if you shoot it well already it would be up to the task.  What ammo do you run in your .270?  Don't get me wrong, not trying to talk you out of buying another gun.  Been eye'n a 300WSM myself.
If nobody ever said anything unless he knew what he was talking about, a ghastly hush would descend upon the earth. AP Herbert

I have not had a chance to shoot it yet.  Hopefully soon.

Santa did use my credit card though.  But it was still thoughtful. Bucky

I didn't give him the chance.  I have yet to ever pay a penny on interest on a credit card.

Growing up with a dad that worked at a bank his whole life, I was taught that is a big no no.  No No

I shot it today.  It felt similar to my 45-70 with heavy loads.  I honestly was expecting more with the light weight of the gun.  So I am pretty happy with it.

It has a really nice Pachmayr Decelerator pad on it.  I have used both and cannot tell much diff between the two.
