"it is an old Weatherby .300 weatherby mag. built in 1954 on an FN mauser action"

I thought so!  My neighbor has one from the same time period as yours.  Inherited it from his granddad.  I can't tell the bbl length or contour of yours from your pic but his is 24" and would compare to a M70 FWT bbl contour.  He also has some original factory ammo marked $7.50.

Mines a 26" barrel and yes about the m70 featherweight contour. The blueing on this thing is unbelieveable! you can literally see your relection off the barrel. This gun also came with about 15 boxes of the original weatherby ammo and a reloading manual/catalog from the same year. When I finish my "Dad cave" this winter I am going to have a area of some sorts dedicated to this rifle.

His is also FINE piece of work with OUTSTANDING blueing.

I've got an early 60's era Weatherby catalog.  Makes for GOOD reading with GREAT pics.  Here's a pic  you should enjoy.

I just put a Boyds thumbhole stock on my son's Stevens 308. I have the factory thumbhole on my Savage 12BTV.  The lamy's are  impregnated under pressure with epoxy resin beforeand druring teh lamination build up,  They are tougher than regular wood and much stronger.  You can scratch them but you have to work harder at it than if it was regular wood.  i love mine.  With lamy you get the pretty and the tough in one package.  Added bonus is lamy is more stable than wood too so swelling of the stock isn't an issue in rainy weather.

The stock on this rifle started out as a Boyd's classic, but I whittled it down to make it more slender, added a shadowline to the cheekpiece, recontoured the grip to give it a more English style curve, gave it a light stain for more of a light walnut tint, added an ebony forend tip and steel grip cap, and finished it with Permalyn oil modified polyurethane using the wet sand method.  The result is it's a nice handling and quick pointing rifle that withstands wet weather well.  It's one of my favorite deer rifles for this reason.  It's in 7-08 with a Ruger MKII action, Timney trigger, Shilen barrel, S&K rings, and blue titanium Cerakote finish.  Pics not current as it now wears a Conquest 3-9X instead of they Leupy 1.75-6.

Thanks!  There was nothing wrong with the scope that was on it, and it looked "cute" too.  That was a first gen version of the 1.75-6X32 with a shorter main tube before they lengthened the scope, so as you can see, it barely fit the ring spacing, even on a short action.  The upside was it's super compact and light and fit that rifle so well.

But, alas... given the amount of time I find myself carrying that sweet little rifle around and the fact the Conquest is more gooder, I thought the switch was a logical choice.  I don't like the fact the Conquest is so long for its power range, especially compared to the nice and compact Leupy, but I'll take that tradeoff in exchange for the optical upgrade.

  ExcellentExcellentExcellent!!

NICE set-up.  The stock contour kinda reminds me of the old English light rifles used in Africa.

Another thing is that it weighs 2.8 lbs, anyone have an idea about how much a savage synthetic stock weighs?

Probably 2lbs+ for a long action factory stock.

All the pics of the rifles were great, I would lovee having any of them. As far as Laminated goes,  I just bought a 17HMR Savage the other day. I bought the model 93R17 BTVS (Thumbhole) and now I kinda wish I had waited and bought the colored laminated version instead of clear.. But after looking at what Ted did to his 7-08, I may rework the finish on my stock a little. I like the color of 03Mosssys 300 mag. too.

Im going to look into the these Boyds stocks more, maybe find one for my 308 R even, Thanks!Howdy

Ted, she's absolutely beautiful, I love the changes you made to the stock and BTW, that blue titanium Cerakote finish is blow away, how is it holding up?

Cerakote is the schiznit!  It's very tough and holds up to abuse extremely well.  It's very difficult to scratch the stuff.  I've neither abused nor babied that rifle.  The stock has sustained some dings, but the metal finish remains like new.  It's also available in several colors.  I highly recommend Cerakote!  It's reportedly the toughest of all the "spray and bake" finishes available.

Ah, yes, I do believe you two have met before.  If I recall correctly, I had it in my truck when you and I met up to go to the RMEF show in Ft. Worth.

Thanks Ted, I have a stainless Win 70 action laying around that I'm thinking about re-barreling and I''m looking for a durable finish for this project.
