So i'm starting to put together some idea's for my next rifle build. I'm leaning heavily towards the 300 Win Mag. I'm getting more and more into the long range game and although i really like what i've seen from the 338 LM, i can't justify the cost it'd would take to shoot regularly nor do i have space to really get the longer ranges of the 338.

Mainly something that i can use on targets 8-1200 yards recreationally. I've found some good target spots on state gamelands so i have the space to do some long distance plinking.

I'd like to go the custom route and am willing to save over the next year or so to accomplish. 2.5-3+ K isn't out of the question.

Who would you  recommend in the custom sector of rifle making for a 300 Win Mag. I've been told GA Precision is worth a look as are Van Dyke outfit from Kansas. Anyone else i should be looking at?

Thanks guys as always.

Are you looking for a sporter weight or something along the "tactical" type line. Sounds like you want a sporter/hunting rifle that is accurate enough to go the distance as well.

More along the lines of a "tactical" setup but again, im open to anything that will give me the ability to consistently hit targets out to 1200ish yards.

I had been interested in the Savage 110BA but mixed reviews leave me a little guarded. If you do get  one this year G, i'll definitely be interested to see how she does for you!

My opinion, I would not get to hung up on having someone like GAP build you one.  You will be adding a hefty chunk of money for just the name.

My local smith only charged me $300ish to install a barrel and bed my action.
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service don't mean a thing when your gun fails during a zombie attack.

GA Precision has a great reputation for building tactical type rifles, but to be perfectly honest, there isn't any big mystery in putting together one. You have LOTS of custom benchrest rifle builders out there in PA that could put together exactly what you are looking for, such as R.W. Hart & Son in Nescopeck.

I really like GAP rifles.  Every detail is taken into account.  They are well respected in the LE precision community.  Its true that you can get a rifle that shoots nearly as good for less, but GAP rifles are nice in every way.

You might wanna talk to Dan about the builder he just used.  I think he's pretty happy to say the least.

Yeah, i'm just looking for shop suggestions by those who have had custom jobs done. Place i can look into and of course i do put a lot of stock into what the regulars around here say. A lot of great people that know more than i do.

I'm much in the same boat as you Paul. I want mine in a .300 Wby though, without the standard Wby throat. With so many good smiths, and so many good companies making components, how does a guy choose? I was going to ask the question about barrels, but I'll start my own thread instead of hijacking yours. Do you have the components in mind for this build, or are you seeking suggestions from the smith?

My problem is i've never had a custom shop build me a rifle so to this point i've never really looked hard. Mel Ewing at Sniper Central in Montana put together my Remy700 but the action and barrel were straight from the factory. The only difference was a B&C stock. Shoots like a dream though, so i'm definitely not complaining.

I can google hundreds of "custom gun shops" and get results but i have little knowledge on the who's who of the bunch.

Hard to beat a 5R.

I have a GAP non-typical hunter, fit and finish and detail are perfect - as well they should be.  It is a beautiful rifle and shoots quite well.

For a tactical gun, I'd be hard pressed to recommend custom when a 5R can be had.  Hell, tweak it if you want, put it in a better stock, and you are still under what a full custom would cost.

Several of my tac guns are 700s with trued bolts, improved (mostly Timney) triggers, external mags, and improved stocks.  Get tnuts if you want and put on a better barrel, but it's hard to be a factory 700 that shoots well.  Herein lies the conundrum: you might get a 700 that shoots 1/2MOA out of the box, or you might get one that shoots 1.5MOA out of the box.  You either get a great deal or an OK deal.  For a custom (like GAP or McMillan or "other"), if it doesn't shoot 1/2MOA, you send it back and have them fix it.  You pay for the certainty of getting a very accurate gun.

Personally, I'd get a 5R in a Manners T5A with their new chassis (total $2000 all in), maybe a Timney trigger ($200) and be done.  it'll be a tack driver and fit like a glove.

Mike Cuypers, Bijou Creek... www.bijoucreek.com.  He builds hunting rifles, tactical rifles, target rifles.  He makes some danged awesome looking dangerous game rifles... may be my next acquisition.

Will work with you on what you want.  Great guy, good prices, AWESOME rifles.  Demonically accurate...
He will help you with ammo, as well...

My rifle weighs 12lb, currently, but I'm going to get him to build me a "hunting stock".  It will weigh 7-8lb, total, then...  the brake it has on it, it will still have less recoil than a 12ga shotgun.
