Well I'm now back on my feet after a layoff and am looking again at scopes for a Marlin Glenfield Model 50 & 25 I recently acquired. I'm looking to do mainly paper punching and plinking. Price wise, I'm looking to stay around $100-250 for one scope. One of the rifles already has a stock 4x scope on it, so I'm only looking for one optic at this time. I would like a scope that is parallax adjustable or at least zeroed around 50 yds (probably be shooting anywhere from 25 ft to 100 yds max).
I'm looking for comments on the following, or even other suggestions I may have missed:
Weaver Classic Rimfire 3-9x32
Mueller 4.5-14x40 Tactical
Mueller 4.5-14x40 APV
Burris Fullfield II 4.5-15x42

Tough call between the Burris and Weaver. If weight is important to you, go with the Weaver. Its only downside is the crappy coin adjustments. (I have a semi- custom version of it with Bushnell 4200 target turrets). The Burris doesn't focus down as far with its AO, if I recall correctly, but has superior adjustments to the Weaver.
Muellers are ok, but I don't think their glass is as nice as the other two. Rimfire Central folks seem to love them though. I think that at typical .22lr plinking ranges (out to 75yds), the 3-9x is enough magnification for all but benchrest rifles. Unless plinking ammo for you is Lapua Midas or Eley Tenex, the limitations of the cartridge will hurt your accuracy before the lack of magnification for all but the nicest rifles. |

I'm with Poodleshooter "God that sounds funny" on this one. It doesn't sound like you're wanting to bench shoot with the rifle, so more magnification is just going to be extra weight and a good picture of what you aren't hitting with the .22 Just my .02, but the Weaver is a good choice, but I'd also look at the Vortex Viper with the a/o. http://swfa.com/Vortex-2-7x32-Viper-Rifle-Scope-P11226.aspx I haven't heard of anyone using it on a rimfire, but it might just be an oversight by rimfire shooters that didn't notice it has an adjustable objective. Pretty versatile really. |

Poodleshooter1: Yeah, the coin adjustments on the Weaver are really the only thing keeping me from putting it at the top of my list. How hard was it to mod the turrets and how much did it cost you for the parts? You're right about Rimfire Central loving those Muellers! They make it really tough to not jump on one, but other sites tend to not put them as high on the pedestal in quality and clarity.
neilbilly: I saw that Vortex Viper listed as having an AO, but after checking the Vortex website and other sites I think it may actually be a typo. The Vortex site states it having a parallax set at 100 yards, which lines up with the other 2-7x32 scopes and makes more sense. If I'm wrong, I may have to add it to the list!
Ach, this isn't getting any easier!

Would be a really sucky typo. I just ordered 2 of them. Might have to rethink where I put those guys. Wife and I both have tricked out 10/22's and I thought with a/o I'd give them a shot. |

I'm kind of fond of the classic V16's for rimfires. I just bought my second one to go on a 22 mag.

The turrets weren't really modified, they're actually built that way by this "semi-custom" maker who contracts scopes to Light Optical Works in Japan (who makes Weaver Classics as well as Bushnell 4200s). You'll find the vendor in a quick search on rimfire central's scope page, as they love 'em over there, but I can't mention it here since SWFA doesn't sell them. I will say that SWFA has an excellent price on the Weaver RV9s if you go that route. I read a lot of reviews on various scope seller sites and found some less than stellar Mueller reviews mixed in with good reviews. They're like the higher end Simmons or lower end Weavers: sometimes you get a gem, sometimes you get a POS. They at least appear to have good warranty support. BTW, the Vortex Viper 2-7x 32mm does not have AO. They do make a 2-7x 35mm rimfire scope in the Diamondback line, with 50yd parallax, but it costs the same as the clearance Vipers, and has inferior glass and turrets (though it appears to have the Nikon Buckmaster style turrets, which are nice IMO). Vortex will not adjust parallax as Leupold does, by the way. I emailed and asked them about it. |

Of the scopes you have listed, the Burris is IMO the better scope. I have that model Burris and it is awesome.

May be out of your price range but if you can find a 4-16x40 Bushnell 4200 on close out somewhere that would be my first choice. They discontinued the model but there should still be some around that would be marked down. |

Yup, it's a typo on the Viper description. I put one of the 2 on my Saiga AK chamberedd in .223 the other one I will put on the Howa 1500 I just ordered for my youngest. Found a really good deal on the Howa. $329 for the ranchhand model with Hogue stock. They have them in several calibers at that price. If you make a back up offer on it Katie will call you and let you know that they still have some at that price. If the link below doesn't work, do a search for Howa on the guns america listings. I've got no affiliation with them, just wanting to pass along what I think is a really good deal. |
