Rig for Pig With Leupold's® New VX-R™ HOG Illuminated Riflescope
The new VX-R HOG is a 1.25-4x20mm riflescope, well suited for the terrain and conditions typical of wild boar country. Its FireDot Pig Plex reticle is not only illuminated, but calibrated to frame up a mature hog and provide just the right amount of lead on running boars. "As a sponsor of Brian 'Pigman' Quaca, we wanted to design a riflescope that matches his passion and commitment to hog hunting," commented Andy York, vice president of sales, marketing and technology for Leupold & Stevens, Inc. "Brian and his fellow boar hunters around the country are now rigged for pig with the VX-R HOG, which offers true daylight-capable illumination, a bright and crisp aiming point, low-profile mount and a forgiving eyebox that allows a quick and comfortable cheek weld." The HOG and other VX-R illuminated riflescopes combine proprietary powered fiber optic technology and the exclusive FireDot reticle to provide hunters with exceptional target definition and acquisition, in the bright light of day as well as the low light of dawn or dusk. VX-R scopes feature a single push button illumination system with Leupold's own Motion Sensor Technology (MST™). A touch of the button illuminates the dot within the reticle. By repeatedly pressing the button, the user can select between eight different intensity settings including a high-low indicator, which flashes when either the maximum or minimum intensity is reached. After five minutes of inactivity, the illumination system automatically switches to stand-by mode, but reactivates at the same intensity setting whenever the rifle is moved. This helps extend battery life and, by reducing movement, allows the hunter to maintain greater stealth in the field. In addition, the VX-R has a fiber optic light pipe with a precisely cut, meticulously polished tip designed to deliver an illuminated dot that can be easily seen in bright light, yet is not overpowering in low-light conditions. Once activated, the dot illuminates with bright, sharp definition, while the rest of the reticle remains non-illuminated. This combination leads the eye naturally to the center aiming point and makes target acquisition quick, precise and simple. Rig for Pig With Leupold's® New VX-R™ HOG Illuminated Riflescope Other key features of the VX-R HOG: Leupold's Index Matched Lens System®, which maximizes light transmission to produce an extremely bright, sharp image across the visual field Blackened lens edges for enhanced light transmission, clarity and contrast DiamondCoat™, an ion-assisted lens coating for optimal light management and maximum abrasion resistance One-turn, non-locking eyepiece to provide smooth, fast and precise focus adjustment for users of different visual acuity, from nearsighted to farsighted Precision finger click adjustments for windage and elevation (1/4-MOA) Leupold's most durable twin bias spring erector system Second generation Argon/Krypton waterproofing CR-2032 coin cell battery, readily available around the country The VX-R HOG has a rugged 30mm matte black maintube and a sleek design that reduces bulk atop the rifle. Sporting Leupold's familiar Golden Ring®, the scope is backed by the company's Full Lifetime Guarantee. Riflescopes with illuminated reticles are legal for use in all states that allow centerfire rifles for big game hunting. Leupold® Continues Optics Innovation With New FireDot™ Reticle System
The system includes five different reticle choices: FireDot Duplex, Ballistic FireDot, FireDot Circle, FireDot 4 and the FireDot Pig Plex. A fiber optic light pipe with a meticulously cut and polished tip provides an illuminated dot, which can be easily seen in bright light, yet is not overpowering in low- light conditions. Once activated, the dot illuminates with bright, sharp definition, while the rest of the reticle remains non-illuminated. This combination leads the eye naturally to the center aiming point and makes target acquisition quick, precise and simple. "The tried-and-true Duplex® reticle was invented by Leupold in the early 1960s; our FireDot Reticle System continues that tradition of innovation," said Pat Mundy, communications manager for Leupold & Stevens, Inc. "An all-new fiber optic LED illumination method is employed for the FireDot, which offers reticle options for a wide range of hunting applications." Designed for fast target acquisition, each FireDot reticle features an extra-bright centerpoint dot. The FireDot Duplex has the versatility for a broad range of game. Ideal for extended-range shooting, the Ballistic FireDot is well suited for varmint, antelope and big game at longer distances. The FireDot Circle is designed specifically for fast-moving targets, including dangerous game, pigs and even turkeys. With its bold post, the FireDot 4 helps draw the eye to the center of the reticle and keeps the upper field of view free of obstructions. The FireDot Pig Plex is calibrated to frame up a mature hog and provide just the right amount of lead on running boars. VX-R riflescopes feature a single push button illumination system with Leupold's own Motion Sensor Technology (MST™). VX-R models include 1.25-4x20mm, 2-7x33mm, 3-9x40mm, 3-9x50mm, 4-12x40mm and 4-12x50mm. Each is available with one or more of the FireDot reticle options. The illumination system is powered by a CR-2032 coin cell battery, readily available around the country Sporting Leupold's familiar Golden Ring®, VX-R riflescopes are backed by the company's Full Lifetime Guarantee. Riflescopes with illuminated reticles are legal for use in all states that allow centerfire rifles for big game hunting. Just inside our facility. I like the cosmetics alot, very different than any other Leupold. The switch for the illumination is a great improvement over previous Leupolds.

I liked the way VX-R looked at SHOT (just for the record, I was also pleasantly surprised by VX-6).
We'll see how they do in the field, but I think these two scope lines are a serious step forward for Leupold (based on limited data for now). ILya

I hunt hogs around 200 nights a year and I can tell you a scope with a 20mm objective is USELESS at the time you usually need to make the shot!!!! I've been using the new VX-R 3-9x50 with good success, you couldn't give me a scope with an objective smaller than 40mm to hog hunt with, I don't care what brand it is...................
What you need is:
Magnification of 6x min, a 3-9 or 2.5-10 is ideal
Good light gathering
Bold illuminated reticle
Rugged

Looks like the pig plex is only on the 1.25-4x... Too bad it's not on the 2-7 too.
Hmmmm... Looks good but if this is VX-2 glass quality then the Burris TAC 30 looks like a better deal.
? Does Leupold warranty the red dot elctronics for life too? If yes, then this starts looking better.
AND to the MAN who hunts 200 nights a year... I have a freezer with a lot of space and an extra bed in CA is you wnat to visit. :)

Mr Wilson-- Is there any reason (other than the price difference if the budget is fixed) to go with the VX-R over an Accupoint for general purpose night hunting on an AR?

Everything I've seen on the Leupold website says they warranty their electronics for 2 years. If they've changed it, it would have to be very recent. |

Trijicon just had a major price increase so there is a substantial difference in price now. Basically in my opinion it's a trade off of what you like or don't like if you factor out the price difference.
VX-R
Likes:
30mm tube and still lightweight
POSITIVE adj clicks
Best glass I've seen on a Leupold
Dislikes:
Battery operated
Accupoint
Likes:
No batteries
Good glass
Lightweight
Dislikes:
Soft adj clicks
Limited lifespan of Tritium and cost to repair
I guess what I really want is a rugged lightweight scope with POSITIVE clicks and a illum reticle without batteries that lasts forever and good glass!!!
Bottom line, I think the Accupoint and the new VX-R are as good as it gets for a quality illum scope in the $500.-$1500. price range.
Go Konus Pro Plus for less money and to Germany or Austria if you have the extra cash to buy the very best!!!

Sorry, haven't tried that model. The only 3 Accupoint models I have are the 1-4x24, 3-9x40 and the 2.5-10x56. The 1-4 is a great tactical scope, the 3-9 is my choice for a all around illum scope and I like the 2.5-10x56 because it has awesome light gathering capabilities, but it's really big and heavy, so rarely use that rifle because of that.
At this point my favorite low light illum scopes are (in order of price):
Konus Pro Plus 3-10x44
Leupold VX-R 3-9x50
Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40
I have a Zeiss Victory illum that I don't like as well as any of the above...................

I just saw this:
Blackened lens edges for enhanced light transmission, clarity and contrast
DiamondCoat™, an ion-assisted lens coating for optimal light management and maximum abrasion resistance Must be those ions with little swish brooms and dust pans out there "gathering light"...
