Mark, that is a very nice look.  I REALLY like it...  (great staging, too)
I've often wished I had had my .338 built with left handed bolt.  So far, I've shot it more left handed than right.
Opinion,untempered by fact,is ignorance.

Thanks, Mike.

The AR sports the SWFA/Bobro mount and it's REALLY the cat's pajamas, as well!

I tried both reticles at 1x on a USPSA target setup at 25 yards. Starting from low gun and using a timer I wanted to see how fast I could shoulder the gun, get in the scope and on target and fire a single round. I'm not a 3-gun guy (yet) but I figure this was a good test for how quick each reticle was at close range. The donut reticle was not only a little faster from buzzer to shot but more telling was that the shot placement was more accurate compared to the T-reticle. Not by much but between the timer and targets it was readily apparent which reticle worked better for me at close range. The donut really grabs your eye and naturally centers itself on your target. With the T-reticle I was forming a quick sight picture using the 3 inner posts. It wasn't as intuitive as the donut and that showed in the times & shot placement. Both reticles got the job done but the donut was simply more effective.

While I didn't get a chance to shoot at any longer ranges (that will come tomorrow, Sunday, or Monday) I did take both scopes out and look at objects between 100-300 yards on 4X. Here the T-reticle has the more open and uncluttered view. The T-reticle is my preference at 4X.

With the donut reticle on 4X the now large circle isn't as much as a view obstruction as I thought it would be. However, I found it has another effect: I naturally wanted to center the target not only on the crosshairs but also in the circle-- which is OK as long as you don't want to do any holdovers. I very quickly noticed that I simulated a holdover I would catch myself trying to recenter the target within the large circle. The secondary circle is a real magnet for centering an object on 4X and I had to think about it and make an effort to maintain the holdover. I wasn't expecting that. I'm sure it will be easy to overcome with some use & practice.

Random thought... If SWFA could change the magnification range to say 1-6X, keep the current donut-reticle design but and scale the reticle in conjuction with the wider magnification range such that the secondary circle goes out of the field of view entirely leaving only the inner crosshairs at maximum magnification that would be fantastic. All the advantages of the donut at low powers and no FOV obstruction or donut "distraction" at higher powers for longer range work. In my opinion that would truly be the best of both reticle designs.

In summary... I still can't decide which one I want to keep!

Welcome to OT, Kiba!  Thanks for sharing your observations.  I too am going back and forth in my mind over which reticle I want to get.  I really like what I see of the donut at 1X, but the circle is a bit thicker and dominates more than I'd prefer at 4X.

I was about to say the same thing, Jeff, but then I remembered that Mark is one of them "special" shooters.

Both nice setups, Mark!

Made up my mind this weekend after some more shooting... the donut is going back and the T-reticle is staying.

It boiled down to my typical usage for the rifle. It's mostly a 50-300 yard gun for plinking and coyotes. The donut just blocked too much of my view at 4X for my primary use. If the rifle was mostly a 5-50 yard gun and the optic was at 1x most of the time I would have gone with the donut.

After a bit more practice on 25 yard USPSA targets I managed to get the time & accuracy difference between the donut and T down to almost nothing. The donut may be more intuitive at 1x at first but with a little work the T-reticle on 1X is nearly as good for me. Again, work with what you have and get good with it.

Another oddity I noticed when zeroing the scopes: the turrets appear to be splined on 0.2 mil increments. While that was OK for windage I had to "compromise" on my elevation zero and to have the knob zero lined up with the hash mark meant setting the bullet impact 0.1 mils off where I really wanted it. For a 1-4x scope 0.1 mils of error is splitting hairs but it's still a reasonable observation. The 0.2 mil splines was probably a compromise needed with making a single rotation 10 mil small diameter knob.

Either way, the scopes are awesome and I really liked both reticles but for my tastes and primary application the T-reticle was the winner.

Can't wait to get a coyote with it instead of just steel and paper. Big Smile

Thanks all - I lurked and read and literally just bought based on all of your fine commentary on this scope.
I went with the capped doughnut :-)  Looking to do some three gun and shoot a coyote and a hog or two to boot.

It is going on  my new BCM 14.5 middy - paid for 2 day shipping so if all goes well I will have pics up by Saturday.   Thanks again to everyone who posted here with comments on this scope.  It is a tremendous help to have a community here willing to shatr.

Thanks again,
Mark
