I'm finally going to get off my duff and scope the Model 7 .308 I bought several years ago.
Factoring in budget and info I've gleaned from lurking here, I've kind of narrowed things down to the following:
Fixed Power scopes IOR Valdada 4x32 Hunter Leupold 4X with #1 reticle (Premier Reticles) Sightron SII 4X
Variables Zeiss Conquest 3x9 Sightron 1.5x6 Bushnell Elite 4200 1.5x6
I'm a scope newbie, being primarily a pistolero. I like the fixed power scope for simplicity -- fewer moving parts, no change in eye relief, etc. It's a general-purpose rifle, so 4X - 6X magnification I think should suffice. I like the etched reticles on the Zeiss and the IOR, having seen a number of wire reticles shoot loose on the range. The German #1 post really appeals to me, but seems hard to come by on an etched reticle without spending huge dollars (which I seem to have misplaced somewhere).
I'm planning to use the Talley aluminum lightweight rings. My Model 7 is older style, with only one hole on the rear receiver bridge. Will this present a problem?
Your thoughts, please. Many thanks, and Merry Christmas to all.

If you are willing to live with a fixed magnification scope, just get a
IOR 4x32. It is a small and light scope that will look and
function great on a Model 7.

DnD57: I started out with a Schmidt and Bender fixed 4 power scope before the price hit the roof for my model 7 ss .308. I liked the simplicity and size of a fixed scope and it worked great for 4 years, I had no problems taking and making my shots on running deer at <50 yds or the longer standing 100+ yarders. It just wasn't the same though as I was used to hunting with variables before I picked up the carbine like model 7. Next I went with a 2-7x36 Kahles. I liked the size of the scope and the power range seemed like exactly what I needed. Shot one buck with this setup and it did the job great. No problems. Then I started comparing scopes again for another rifle and the Zeiss Conquest made a such a good impression on me that I decided to throw one on my Model 7. The optical clarity, long eye relief and the etched Z-plex reticle had me sold along with the lifetime transferrable warranty. Really like the view of the cross hairs on this one. The Zeiss is a little heavier and longer than the other two but still feels and looks right at home on the smaller Model 7. The Kahles was nice and the power selection a good route to go but it didn't seem like anything special for what you pay. I would put this one and my older version Leupold Vari-X III 2.5-8x36 on the same level. The S&B was sweet and top of the hill IMO. The scope is built to last and has a great view, but the price these days is pretty darn steep. As far as mouting with 3 base screws you might want to consider a one piece base.
Anyway it took me over 5 years to nail a scope down for my favorite hunting rifle, Good luck.

If you are going to consider a Bushell Elite 4200 (and they are good scopes) you should consider the Burris Signature Select 1.5-6 x40. I just placed one on my model 7 in 7mm-08. It's wonderful. I highly recommend the scope, especially if you think you might find yourself shooting varmints at some time. Just thought I'd throw my 2cents worth in.

I have a Rem M7 SS in .308. I have a Burris 2-7x compact on mine, in a
one peice Leupold base and Leupold rings. It's a romping stomping
little bugger, and the scope and mounts have held up fine.

Hmm... for the extra cost of the getting Premier Retical to do a conversion you can move into some nice glass. There were some four power 4a Kahles on the sample list. |

The Nikon team Premos
Bushnell 4200 are very good in you price range and the Ziess is good
You want to use good scope mounts and rings and I am sure SWFA can advise you depending on which scope you get.

I would get the Nikon Primos or the Elite 4200 and spend a bit extra on some real good rings and bases.

I would have to agree with Tip69 on the Zeiss Conquest. Normaly I would suggest the 3-9X40 but I have really come to appreciate my Conquest 4X32. Slightly smaller and lighter-it would be perfect on that Model 7!

The Model 7 in .308 is a great woods rifle, and I have a reliable old Redfield 4X with post and crosshair reticle mounted on mine. It works perfectly! I would go with either the IOR or Leupold 4X.
