In my house it is understood... Whatever the wife says I can do, I do! I actually want to get her a 7-08!
If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

For a while I had two, both were rifles I won on raffle tix.  Twenty bucks invested and I ended up with a Ruger M77 compact and Savage 10.  The Ruger consistently shots nickles at 100 yrds and baseballs at 250 yrds with 140 BT.  For a 5.5 lb rifle that Ruger is sweet. Only shot one doe at 3 yards with it, the doe just walked right in to me.  I just pointed the barrel and pulled the trigger, too close for the scope.

Friends daughter took a medium cow elk at about 80-100 with her 7mm-08 shooting 140 TSX. The 7mm-08 can do more than alot of people want to give it cedit for.

Oh and for the Savage, it didn't shot as well, 1.5 in at 100, and was a bit heavy for a light recoiling caliber, so I swop barrels for an ER Shaw 338 Fed.  Much better suited.

Welcome, DannyP!

Go ahead and do your research ... then get the 7-08.  It is the perfect cartridge for a novice.  Also perfect for an expert.

DP....  what rifle you thinking about getting?   I got my 12 yr old at the time (14 now) a Rem 700 CDL in .270 and he shot it fine.  Those Sims recoil pads are very nice.  I think they do chamber the 7mm-08 in the CDL as well.  Good luck
take em!

Hornady A-max has a much better BC than the closest .308 versions (33% better than the .308 168 gr. Amax). You may only be interested in shooting out to 300 yards but that's still going to provide a flatter shooting bullet even if loaded to the same velocity...and you could load it significantly lower, resulting in less recoil, for the same velocity.

I was just getting ready to add almost this same info though I can't say that it would have been as well said. The 7mm 08 is all this and more. It is capable of most anything in N. America and is fun to shoot as well. I even love this cartridge for Coyotes and other light weight critters. And it will knock a Pig on his *##!
Good Luck with it.

I finally got the chance to break in and sight in my X-Bolt 7mm-08 last weekend.  After a 5 shot regimen of shoot/clean with cheap Prvi Partizan 140 grainers, we shot some groups at 100 with the rest of the box.  This was with a Viper 2-7 scope mounted.  My very first 3 shot group out of the rifle made a nearly perfect clover measuring right at 1/4" center to center.  I cleaned the rifle and handed it to my buddy.  He proceeded to put the next 3 rounds into one ragged hole we eyeballed right at 3/8" on the outside edges with a ruler, which means a .1"ish group.

As much as I like the rifle, and as well as it shoots, the stock doesn't fit me quite right.  Shouldering the rifle puts the bottom point of the recoil pad in my shoulder instead of the meat of the pad.  It doesn't have much drop in the stock.  Anyway, my buddy went home with the rifle after shooting that 1 hole group.  He was in love with it even before shooting it anyway.  This was a rifle I was really looking forward to.  Too bad it didn't fit quite right.  Probably never own a better shooting rifle, but one day I want another 7mm-08.

Jason,
Why didn't you just change out the stock, factory rifles that shoot that well are a bit hard to come by.

Change it to what, exactly?  As far as i know, there aren't many options out there for x-bolts.  I wouldn't spend the extra money on it anyway.  It was a fine rifle as it was- why not let someone enjoy it in that form?  And honestly, I have zero real need for a one-hole hunting rifle.  I could probably get the rifle back someday if I really wanted to anyway...

My buddy was in love with the rifle before we even found out how well it shot.  I'm happy that he's so ecstatic to have it.  This just gives me another person who's always eager to go shooting with me.

Well said, you'll get it back. It may not be in the form of that particular rifle but to be sure you will get it back and more. I say more friends need friends like you never change.
