Wife needs a rife but not the recoil,Hunt mostly deer size but may like to try for Elk.
She has somewhat of a bad back and shoulder so I was thinking like a Savage model 11 lightweight hunter in a .260 Rem. I have a 243 already and a 270,Need one larger then the 243.Thanks

The .260 is a very intriguing round. Light to moderate recoil, and with the heavies (139 to 147gr) can have the same ballistic drops of a .300 min mag out 1000 yards! Not bad for a 308 case. My only concern is the availability of factory ammo. If you reload, it is not a concern. If you don't, ammo can be a pain to locate. This is especially true if you are on a hunt, and need some on short notice.

7mm-08 gets the most recommendations for light recoiling game hunting from what I've seen.

.257 Bob, 6.5x55 or .260, 25-06. The 7mm-08's in my experience kick about like a .270. The .260 with a 129g Hornady SST should be VooDoo on deer sized animals. I load that in my 6.5x55 CZ 550 FS and it gives great accuracy and terminal performance on deer.

260 and 7-08 would be a great choices for your wife or for yourself for that matter. The 7-08 will offer alot more choices as far as rifles and ammo are concerned.

you could go outside the box and muzzle break something a little larger. My son shoots a 243 with the boss and it has no recoil (except noise percussion!) and a friend has a 300 win mag custom rifle that his 10 yo daughter shoots--no felt recoil. And unless you reload, the 260 might be tough to find. 270, 280 not so tough!

I would call it good with 7-08. It has everything: power, range, excellent bullet selection, and low recoil. My 7-08 will be my kids' first big-game rifle, if they can get me to give it up. My 7-08 has that "killin'" feel to it. You point it at something ... bang ... something goes down.
I like 260 Rem also, but the 7-08 does what the 260 does, and has more flexibility in ammunition and components available. |

Thanks to all for some great ideas like the 7mm-08 & the 25-06 rounds.I wounder about the 7mm a little thinking it would kick her to much(we like to go to the range some) not so worry for her on a hunt, thats the kick is the last think she will remember, lol.
Isant the a 6mm round as well? and is it big enough? Thanks!

I'd have her shoot as many different rifles and calibers as possible. Believe it or not my daughter shoots her husbands .45-70 Guide gun using Remington 405gr ammo with no problems at all. In fact she LIKES it. Granted the ammo is loaded down (MAYBE 1250fps) but you don't need much umph with a bullet of that weight and diameter. Just food for thought.

Get a Browning BAR in 7mm-08. Because it is an auto loading rifle a very large amount of the recoil is absorbed in the running of the action.
I have one in 7mm Mag and recoil is very mild vs bolt gun in 7 mag. My dad has a BAR in 243 and the recoil is like shooting an AR-15. |

BARs are great, soft shooting rifles without a doubt, but even in light rifles I have found the 7-08 quite light on recoil. I wouldn't count out a bolt gun in that caliber.

Remington also produces "reduced recoil rounds", just a thought.

I don't know where you live but something to look into for reducing recoil is a good suppressor. Some states allow you to hunt with them like Wisconsin. SureFire and Proof Research both make a very good and light weight suppressor that greatly reduces recoil and eliminates muzzle blast.
It is one way you can use a larger caliber and greatly reduce two common problems that tend to turn women off to shooting, sound and recoil.

Pretty much all of these are necked down .308 brass as diameter increases you gain heavier bullets at the top end of the bullet selection but as the bullet and powder charge increase so does the recoil.
7mm08 7 mm 260 Rem 6.5 mm 243 Win 6 mm I see no reason at all that she should not be able to kill a deer or elk with any of the three of these with good bullet placement but I tend to point people toward the 7mm08 as it seems to have about 2/3 the recoil of a .308 Bullet type makes a huge difference in any of these calibers and ones like Nosler Partition and Barnes TSX that hold together will punch through to the vital organs where lesser bullets may fragment and not do an adequate job. Also the 6.5x55 cartridge is another that has been quite popular. For some reason the 260 Rem never really seemed to catch on well but it is a fine cartridge. the 7mm08 has really been gaining popularity though and has a very nice selection of bullets that can be loaded if you hand load. When she is on the bench buy here a lead sled type rest that takes the recoil out of the rifle and lets her be comfortable with it. I would recommend a Tikka T3 stainless composite they shoot very well 1 in guarantee.
