Which would be the better option the ZEN RAY ZRS 10x42 or Olympus Magellan 10x42 EXWP 1 for hunting. I could stretch the budget to buy the zen ray ed2 but i am worried about the extra weight. Any advice appreciated.

Good question. I think you may have a hard time finding anybody with experience enough with both to answer your question. I have never even seen a Magellan, and trust me, I have looked at lots of binoculars in all sorts of places. There have been some good comments about them posted in various places...now you know what I know about them .
On the other hand, I have had the ZRS HD in both first and second versions. Of all of the binoculars in its price range, it is one of the two or three best I have seen and it will push much more expensive glass. There is not much I can even nit pick about it, considering its price. It has a nice wide fov, flat field, bright image with good contrast, and it is a very compact for being a full size 42 mm binocular. I would be pretty amazed to find you did not like it. I have never felt handicapped by not having "something better" any time I have been afield with it.
By the way, welcome to OT . Edited by Klamath - November/26/2011 at 21:06 |

Extra weight is not necessarily a bad thing when hunting. A few extra ounces helps calm down the shakes after hoofing up a hill. I have the ED2s and never found them a bother. The ZRS HD is a fine glass and outstanding value, but the ED2s are extremely high-performing.

I have also hunted in some pretty rough terrain with the ED2's, And haven't really been bothered by them. My 14lbs rifle, that sometimes bothers me...

If it is tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I stumbled accross another binocular the eagle optics ranger ED 10x42 on sale for about $310. I believe this is very similar in performance to the zen ray ED2, if this is the case i will pursue them. Any thoughts? Cheers Gary
