If I remember right you only bought a 5KW system so you never get out from under the electric Co.
Mine is 20.5KW and will replace the electric bill completely plus an additional 25%... Fixed lease going forward so no inflation... IF I can get it installed...

Good morning gentlemen!!! It's supposed to be a Beautiful day hitting the mid 60s!
I got the shock of my life last evening. First I received a call from Met-Ed. Yes I have to upgrade the street transformer at my expense even though it's Met-Ed's property and will remain so. Secondly, after the original estimate to upgrade coming in at ~$2000 the written estimate came out as $1305.50 HITH did that happen?!?!?!? About 30 minutes after getting that news Green Solar called to tell me that they had decided to subsidize the upgrade. My funeral should be Monday or Tuesday, I haven't decided yet. I think I'm gonna buy a Lottery Ticket today....

Mornin gents.
G, can you operate a backhoe like a genie on a flying carpet? If so, have I got a weekend plan for you. Bud, in my experience, the power company does not want you supplementing their power. Overcast, mid 50s to 60s, with calm winds today. |

I don't think a backhoe moves fast enough to interest Graham.... Tearing stuff down, yes but fast!
The Green Solar rep says they will start shipping the system next week!!!

I have entertained the idea of a 10kw wind turbine, and it would probably produce more power than I need. The price of the turbine is the cheapest part of the investment. The tower and the base it would need would be the largest part of the expense. When you get down to it, I can pay a lot of electric bills for what it would cost for the system.

It seems most here who go solar simply exchange their electric bill plus some for either leasing or making principle and interest payments to the solar company. My bro inlaw spent $60,000 on solar panels for his house and is doing payments over 20 years. When I asked him what the interest rate was to the solar company, he had no idea. He didn't even comprehend that he would have to pay back considerably more than the $60,000 he borrowed.
I would love to do solar, but would never want to borrow to do it. |

The loan rates for my lease is only 2.99%. Where the solar companies make out is the Government 30% kick back. They make most/all their money on the front end thru federal tax incentives which they get under a lease. Purchasers would get that under a direct purchase / private loan butt nobody out there will offer attractive rates for that.

I'll be paying $303 fixed a month in perpetuity (20yrs) once the system is on line. This is slightly above my average bill currently but with 5 to 7% annaul inflation for Electric projected going forward it makes plenty of sense to me... Fixed expense for retirement planning...

What kind of warranty is on the panels? I think BIL said his had a 20 year warranty, same as his loan term. His rate IIRC was near 6. You did much better.

Yes I had a friend that put a system in and warned me of the pitfalls. Panel warranty is up to 25 years now, at which point they are guaranteed to output 80% of rating. I over sized my system so that I still have complete self generation coverage plus 10% when she's down to 80%. Inverters are top of the line Solar Edge models too.
