At least I live on a hill.  Folks that live near the trinity, brazos, neches, angelina, and sabine have it really, really rough right now.

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

Ranger buddy of mine used to carry Winston Mediums in ranger school.  I have never been a smoker, but when we went admin and the RI's said "smoke 'em if you got 'em," I gladly traded a dip of snuff or two down the road for one of those Winstons.  It was like a little slice of civilization in the middle of misery.

My first cigarette was a Winston. My old man smoked them so fast that I stole a pack a week or 2 from him and he never knew.

My Dad smoked Pall Malls so I copped some of his.

God damn that was a long time ago.

Now haven't smoked in over 20 years.

Grandad smoked "Pell Mell" reds, no filter, as he pronounced. Those yellow fingers....I sure miss that old man.
He'd let me smoke when I was with him since I was about 10, but it had to be Pall Mall.

I was too short to see over the steering wheel of his Ford LTD, so he had a pillow he'd prop me up with and we'd go driving around the country side. Me driving, smoking Pell Mells and him drinking "whiky" and telling stories about the old days and some about Jesse James.
I was about 13 or so then.

My Mother smoked Winston. She would send me down to the store with a dollar on my bike to get a carton for her. There would be enough change to get some candy too. I have never taken a puff. I hated the smell of the house from the cigarettes. She died from lung cancer.

So did mine. Four packs a day for years. Died at 69 from Emphysema.

Never had the C-Rats, fortunately.  At least when I was in they brought back the tiny Tobasco bottles to the MREs.  There was such an uproar when they got rid of them that they had to pay the $0.04 to put them back in.  Thank the Lord!
