I am looking for a scope that is 4-12x50mm. The Leupold Vx-3 has a 4.5-14x50mm and the VX-II has a 4-12x50. I really like the 50mm it is just smarter and looks better on the rifle. I think I want the Boone and Crockett Reticle as well, I wish they offered Mil-dot as a standard reticle but they don't so I might custom order a scope from leupold. Just didn't know what route I wanted to go. I own a Leupold 4-12x50mm in a VX-II but never really looked at the VX-3 very much or put rounds down range with one. I like my Vx-II just didn't know if the VX-3 has that much more to offer. $$ isn't the issue, tax return will be used well. I also like Leupold as well so if you just want me to look at different brands No thanks my mind is set on that. The scope will be going on a .17 hmr by Savage Arms, might be a bit over kill, let me know if I should switch down to the 3-9x50mm. I do like the higher powered scopes tho. If someone could help me out that would be great.
Thanks, A1C Bogie

Welcome! Given the choice, I'd always opt for the VX3. Whether it's worth the extra cash is solely your decision.

If money isn't an object, I too would go with thw VX-3. I don't understand the Boone and Crocket reticle on a .17HMR though. I will say that with Leupold, it seems that yesterdays VX-III is todays VX-II. As Leupold comes out with new features and glass the current VX-III become the second teir scopes while the new scopes become the firs tier VX-IIIs. Just an observation a friend of mine made, and he is a Leupold fan.

Life's concerns should be about the 120lb pack your trying to get to the top of the mountain, and not the rock in your boot.

I recently purchased a VX-3 CDS and could not be happier.
reasonable price - the light weight - CS/warranty - simple no frills design - good glass - Leupold scope covers along with other options - reputation/resale - Makes for a great pure hunting scope.

Since you are using a 17 HMR. How close are you intending to shoot? Most VX3 scopes are parallax set at 100yds and if they are an AO or side focus most start at 75yds. I have a Leupold VXII 3-9x33 EFR on my 17HMR. And I never feel the need for more magnification.

I have a VX II 4-12X40AO on a .22 Annie and couldn't be happier with it. I would choose an adjustable objective scope for extreme accuracy and close focus with the rimfire.I like to shoot a hole at 50 yards and then put 4 more rounds through that same hole.I wouldn't want anything less than 12X for that trick.
You might also take a look at the Weaver V16 and Muller(SP) scopes. Also if extreme long range is in the picture the internal adjustment will need to be considered.
