I've acquired a stainless / laminate Ruger 1 B in 300 Winny. The factory stock is S L I P P E R Y ! I'm investigating getting it checkered. Laminates can be done, but have special considerations due to the glue layers, possibility of chipping, etc. I think the standard is a coarse 18-20 lpi. Can anybody recommend a good, reasonably priced shop? Bigdaddy, is that something you mess with? Thanks.

Checkering or "checking" is definitely an art requiring tremendous patience. I did it once and it turned out very well, but I would never willingly do it again. My infinite patience is legend and is the only reason I completed it.
I have great respect for anyone who does "checking" by hand. It does leave a somewhat profound feeling of accomplishment once completed, though. Brandon, I suspect, can do a very good job of it.

To me, checkering is one of those things that can really make or break a custom stock. I don't know how Remington did my 700 APR but it is fantastic. Probably machine cut, but that's a guess.

At least it is not stamped or pressed... machine cut is very symmetrical and very nice. That is a great looking rifle...

Love that APR. I have a 77 with a laminated stock. Ruger did a good
job and mine is not checkered or slippery. That is an interesting point about glue. |

Just passing this on,I used a material called Marine Tex to stop the slippery grip on my Remmy R5,Worked very well,Easy to put on & only cost $35 [enough for 4 rifles]You can make this stuff adding any color you want to get a good match for your rifle.Take's approx 4 hrs to dry.
I've added this to 2 of my other rifles as my hand sweats alot.Really good stuff. It can be found in hard ware stores & most boat shops have supplies on hand! I have only used it on plastic stocks [McMillian,HS Precision]don't know if it work on Wood.
