I just picked up a new Weatherby Vanguard .223 and now looking at scopes.
I have Leupold VX-3 and Zeiss Conquest on (4) other guns to give you an idea of what I am used to.
I plan to use this rig for coyotes in South Texas where shots can range from 50-300 yards.
I have read good things about the Nikon BDC System and Computer Program.
Prostaff, Buckmaster and Coyotes are all possibilites.
Vortex Diamonback gets good reviews but I have also read some skeptical words about an unfriendly eye box?
Sightron also gets good reviews?
I have never owned a mil-dot scope or BDC so I will be having fun learning to use either.
My VX-3's have the CDS System and my Zeiss are just straight Duplex.
I am trying to stay in the $300 range.
Thanks for you ideas?

Anyone have experience with the Weaver Grand Slam 4.5x14x40 AO?
Is the Nikon BDC Computer Program enough to make you buy Nikon?
Thanks!

Bushnell makes a 3-9x40 Elite with a DOA reticle. If that is in your zoom requirements, the Elite is a good choice. I find the glass to be similar to the Nikon Monarch.
I have never used Nikon's ballistic program. But there are several programs available that would work and the Nikon product would not be the deal maker for me. I have had good luck with a few Nikons and I would buy more based on that alone. The same goes for the Elite. Edited by tahqua - January/29/2012 at 10:05 |

Its a little more but I like these two: Leupold FX3 6x42 with Long Range Duplex and the Aimpoint 9000L 2moa red dot. You should not have a lot of drop out to 300 if you sight in at 200 and work with it a little on the range the dot should do everything you need. The 6x would take you out to 500 yds if zeroed at 200 the next dot down should be 300 then 400 then where the line goes to heavy 500. I can get onto a moving target with a 6x not so well with anything higher power.

I just put the vortex viper HS on my cz 527 in .223, and shot it today at the range. I was just sighting in, but for $500, I couldn't be happier. It's the 4-16x44 with side focus. Huge sweet spot for the magnification and clarity is on par with my zeiss 3-9x conquest. Adjustments were accurate as well. I also have a vx-3 in 1.75-6, and this glass is at least in the discussion with both the Leopoldo and conquest. It may not be quite as good, but the coyotes won't be able to tell. Good luck. Vortex also has a pretty good ballistics application, by the way, and you can order custom turrets for your load data once you've settled on a cartridge.

Thanks - good suggestion and I will do some reading.
I am a huge fan of the VX-3 ( I own 3 now) and I have a FX-6 on my 1885 45-70 that I love.

For coyotes and target shooting do you recommend a 4x12 or 6x18 set up?

unless you carry a shotgun or something like that i wouldnt recommend anything more than 4x on the bottom, a coyote at 15yds is a huge target on 6x. |

That is a good deal. How important do you think a BDC type reticle is for coyotes? I could have some shots out to 300-400 yards but not more than that.

Honestly, for me personally, I don't believe a BDC reticle would be important enough to make me miss out on that deal on the Big Sky!! |
