A new occupant to the stable... a Ruger 1 S in .300 H&H Mag. It has Circasian walnut, high luster bluing and the "period" red pad. I topped it with a S&B Summit.

Very nice. I like that a lot. I've been eyeing a few #1's but haven't pulled the preverbial trigger on one yet.

Beautiful rifle. Any particular reason you chose the .300 H&H over the much more widely used .300 win mag? I only ask because I have been trying to convince myself for some time that I need a .300 H&H for "nostalgic" purposes. If I found a deal on one half as pretty as your No. 1 I doubt I could resist.

Negative Mark...just plain ole' Ruger mounts. No particular reason for the H&H other than pure want. I've had and liked 300 Winny's, but this choice just seemed right. Besides, you can get a 26" BBL (with this #1) and still have the OAL manageable. Thanks for the nice comments everybody. |

I have two #1's, one in .458WM, the other is, of course, the Lott. Both are outstanding shooters and love the "style". The wood in yours is magnificent. My .458WM looks much better since BigDaddy "cleaned it up"... very similar grain to yours.
300H&H is a really nice caliber. I got one in 1885 high wall, 28" octagonal barrel. Love it. I've only fired it out to 100, but groups are fantastic and it beats 30-06 pretty handily ballistically... 200 and 250gr bullets... I am not scoping it. The #1's have a Pentax 4x and Conquest 4x, respectively. Put the scopes on because I could not see the front sight well in low light. Tried a fiber optic front sight and just did not like the way it looked, so put the original back on. The Lott with the Conquest is VERY quick shooting... a little faster than the WM with Pentax... not much, but a little. I now want a #1 in 45-70.

Sure wish I could find another Conquest 4x. Had one a few years back but sold it (dumb azz syndrome kicked in). I am a sucker for #1's. Very classy, and most of the newer ones perform admirably. |
