Well this evening I went outside to compare the two scopes side by side from 8:00 to 9:30. And I was shocked that there really was not that much differnce in the two! There was just a slight edge in the VX-3 over the NEW VX-1....Maybe i'ts just me? |

If the exit pupil was the same on both, I would think the brightness would be roughly the same. Now if you could mount them side by side on a tripod or something looking at letters on a street sign at some distance, and then go back and forth between the two, you might see a difference in clarity - imo.
I have a VX-3 1.5-5x20MM with the illuminated duplex on my AR15. The reticle is the sweetest one I've ever seen - illuminated or not.

Its just that Leupold advertises the Extended Twilight lens in the VX-3 to the ultimate low light scope, yet that New VX-1 gave it a run for it's money. Maybe I was expecting to much from the VX-3. The VX-3 had the slight edge in contrast and brightness. Just Slight!

Even ho- hum scopes these days are pretty good when compared with scopes from the past.
Minor improvements in such things as resolution and twilight performance, often cost a great deal more money to implement- it's the "diminishing returns" thing. Isn't technology and competition grand? Optics just keep getting better. |

Yes,we do have it good!
One of the reasons I gave up using my old Weavers as "go to" scopes.

Update. I recompared the two scopes tonight, but this time I used a white background with black stripes on it going horizontally and also, viewed some game with it tonight and the VX-3 did much better this time. But that VX-1 is still a good scope for the money.

Then there are things like depth of field, sweet spot, field curvature, aberration control, tunneling, etc.
There is more to it than centerfield performance comparisons. Higher end scopes are have small improvements in many areas that add up to a big improvement overall, IMO.
I do agree that low end scopes offer a lot more than they used to, though.
