I have a friend who has a marlin xl7 25-06 W/22" bbl. I have seen him put 3 shots in a cluster at 100 yds. that you could cover with a dime with boring regularity. I know he uses remington corelokt ammo, and I believe it is 120gr., but not positive on that. For what it's worth, my son has the xl7 in 30-06 and it will do the same with corelokt 150gr. And my wife had one in 30-06 that was right there with the other 2 in accuracy. I know that's only 3 rifles tested, but the marlin xl7 has convinced me that it is one accurate s.o.b. And the price just can't be beat. With that said, I also had a tikka 308 that was just spooky accurate, with just about any ammo I fed it. As far as optics go, I think that Kahles is an excellent choice. Happy New Year, And Good Luck!

Own a few of the Marlin X rifles myself, 25-06, 308 and 7mm-08.  Yep, the Marlin X rifles are an inexpensive rifle and I don't particularly care for its stock, but like tman said, they are accurate.

I just finished a "project" for a friend. I handlapped and broke in the bore of a Savage Axis 25-06 ($350), installed a Timney trigger adjusted at 2.4 lbs., crisp and nice, mounted a DNZ medium one peice mount and a Nikon Monarch 3 scope, and developed handloads for the rifle.
Before i started with the rifle it was shooting 1.2-1.5" with cheap Remington ammo. After i was done with all the fun work and used the once fired brass (fully processed and sorted and neck sized), the rifle shoots 0.3-0.5" 5 shot groups.
I sort of liked it too much.

I am sorry for the late post, but got kind of busy. The rifle is really beautiful and far exceeds the expectations I had. Best trigger I have ever shot and the rifle is very accurate (1 inch with factory loads) and I have only had the opportunity to shoot about 40 rounds so far. I have a friend that is working up some different loads and that should be fun. The Z6i is also unbelievable (2-10x50). I can't wait for deer season!

I am a big fan of the Coopers. That said, you blew the $1,500 budget. You did get value for every $ spent.  Thunbs Up  Love your rifle!
