Thanks y'all . I don't really deer hunt because I detest spending hours sitting in a stand. I think half my infatuation with hunting hogs is getting to ride around under the full moon and glass the senderos. It's like a box of chocolates, you never know what your gonna get.

nice story and great pics..
I love this time of year for pigs.. Like you, being able to get out at night and exploring and seeing what's out is so exciting. We went out for a few days last week and got to play with some Thermal imaging for spotting and then stalking up on them. So much fun! |

We hunt Roedeer. It's a small deer and very fun to hunt and good eating. You find them pretty much all over the country and it is themost common deer we have.
The Fallow deer is also being more and more common all over, as many of my fellow hunters, are agreing on a voluntary protection. It is bigger than the Roedeer and have a nice rack. A very few places you can find Sika deer. I have never come across one. The biggest Deer we have is the Red Stag. Now those you can't find everywhere. They are not to find where i live. I'm so fortunate to have some good friends in an area where they are located. I have tried many times to get one but no luck. They are very shy. Like the Elk. When it comes to shotgun hunting we have a lot of Ducks - Phesants - and other birds. I like Rifle hunting the most though |

Wow. I didn't know you had them down there. Yeah they are tasty.
I'm a little jealous on you guys in SA. You have a lot of exotic animal choose from. Do you have to own the land to hunt or do you have public land like the US?

Whereabouts is S. Texas?
I grew up down there (Corpus area) and hunted all over the area including deep south Texas. I find it funny that people call San Antonio "South Texas" I live in Austin and our lease is just south of Seguin. I sure miss the terrain and hunting down there even though we are on a great piece of property. I like hog hunting near water sources as well and using a road feeder to put out corn on a long in the thick stuff with the winds pushing the scent into the woods to pull them out. Good times for sure. We are taking Randi Rogers out in a few weeks for her first hog hunt. Can't wait! |

They where originally brought in by Dutch settlers to the Cape, who wanted meat they where familiar with. They are classified non indigenous, so may not be sold or transported to other farms. But the Fallow deer somehow miraculously appear on land 100 of kms away. Yes we are spoilt for hunting in SA, our hunting is done on Private land. You pay the land owner a daily fee, roughly R300 to R500, for which he supplies you a place to stay. Normally a Lodge or bush camp, and then the animals have a price. Depending on where you are in SA Impala from R800 till about R1500 for a male. Kudu from about R3000 for a young male till about R12000 for a trophy. Overseas hunters pay in Euros or Dollars here is a link to the place I like to go too in Natal. www.hunting-safaris-africa.com And here are few links to posts I've put on OT with photos in them http://www.opticstalk.com/my-office-for-a-week_topic33339.html http://www.opticstalk.com/zeekoepan-hunt_topic29941.html Edited by Glock - March/19/2013 at 11:45 |

I haven't been back and looked at this thread in a while. Y'all can "highjack" it all you like. I've never hunted outside the U.S. and I like hearing about hunting overseas. I WILL go to South Africa in the next five years though.
Sorry I didn't answer your questions Charles. The ranch is thirty miles east of Laredo. Nearest town is Aguilares, we're about twenty miles south of there. I love South Texas from December to April, the other months-I don't go. That's as close to hell as you can get, and I work outside in the Texas heat. Maybe if your place allows it, we can "trade" a hunt sometime?
