Does any one here reload .300 WM?
What are some opinions on variations that you have done?

there is a bad load in a WM, maybe the WSM, but the wm shoots about anything as long as the powder is on the slower side.
do you have a specific combination? |

I had success using 180 Barnes TSX with IMR 4350. Friends have used RL-22 successfully, but my Sako didn't like it.
I'd stay with 180gr and up, Sky. Berger makes some good ones, as does the Accubonds.

Rancid is a BIG .300 WM fan.
Hit him with a PM if he don't jump here with both feet, as I predict he will, if he sees it.

I do mucho 300WM reloading, my guns (or "I", by proxy) tend to like large rounds moving fast - smaller rounds moving really fast haven't been as accurate. I've thrown 110s up to 220s, my guns love 180-208 and I usually load over IMR4831, that has been a great powder for me.
I'll have to look up recipes, but would ask what you need done, hunting or target? Hunting, 180 TSX or TTSX, I am a true believer. For range, I like 208 Amax loaded on the hot side.
Tell me what you want and I'll let you know what I've tried.
My guns have done OK with 168s and 175s, but not nearly as well as with 180s, 190s, and 208s.
300 is my favorite rifle caliber, by a significant margin (though my 243AI is fun as hell to shoot, I just don't have the confidence in its stopping power as I do with the WM.)

G, primarily a hunting load. The A-bolt with the barrel that I have is not ideal for target.

I reload for my 300 WM and it really likes H4831sc with 180 Nosler CT B-Tips. I haven't found the 300 to be all that fussy with IMR-4350 or IMR-4831 either for that matter. For whatever reason, 165's don't shoot as accurately as 180's in my 300.

You'll probably get more to consider that you planned for by the time this thread is a month old. I stand a few feet behind RC and RF as their experience with the 300wm far exceeds my own. But I shoot a Rem Sendro which has more or less a heavy varmint barrel contour. After working several loads with the Berger 168vld I found 72.5grs of IMR4350 with OAL being 3.62 I could shoot 3/4 at 200yds. Granted I have to be on my game but have done it more than twice. I loaded some test rds today with Berger 185VLD with IMR4350 starting at 68grs up to 70grs. If it does as well I expect it will likely be the load I take to VA in April for the competition. Unless I have the 7mm wsm finished which is questionable. And I have to say also that the 300wm is my fav right now even as much as I love the .270.
While on the subject of the 300wm let me ask. I took 29 deer this season. (I donate to hunters for the Hungry) and kept some record of shot performance of the Berger 168. 9 dropped where they stood being hit straight thru low double lung, or quartering heart opposite leg destroyed. One of those being the biggest I've taken, a 5 1/2 yr old heavy bone 6 pointer. 20 ran from 10yds to 70yds 3 of them being hit alittle far back but still good vitals all the rest being hit just like the ones that dropped. Now I know deer are unpredictable and amazingly tough. But what puzzles me is of the 20 that ran more than 20 yds about half didn't leave any blood trail at all. There was blood at the point of the bullet strike and blood where they were layin but none could be found between. Now those of you who shoot this round and are familiar with the devastation it does how is that possible? The deer in my area average 140-150lbs. And the big ones can be 180 and very rarely 200. The big six I took was 170. I do understand that this rd is designed to expand and stay together well which is one reason I like it so much. I actually prefer it not pass thru as this puts all possible shock on the animal. When I am taking aim I divide the body by thirds placing the shot in the high end of the bottom third. This generally puts the round top of the heart low lung and if possible the deer is quartering away for the shot to pass thru the opposite leg. With heavy trauma to the heart region and most likely heavy lung damage the bleeding potential should be off the charts. And with one front leg out of commission the running gate should be severe. Now with a mid or high lung shot I know it could be said it takes time for the body cavity to fill to the wound channel but with most of these shots that wasn't the case. . I know there is no absolute answer but maybe you can expand my understanding alittle on bullet performance. I'll follow up with how the 185's do in a couple days. |

I love how old threads get resurrected, ahhh the memories. Then I saw Roy's post and it made me sad again.
Skylar, if you are still looking, I am now loading for several hunting buddies who run 300WM after seeing mine drop animals with authority.
