    Posted: May/01/2014 at 10:43

I am in the process of setting up an SPR-ish AR.  The rifle carries a free-float forend tube with 1939 rail along the top.  Using a set of rings that I currently have, in order to get the proper eye relief, the front ring would be mounted on the free-float rail.  Is this an acceptable method?  Are there any drawbacks?

I plan to use the rifle for 3-gun competition, training and other 'rough & tumble' activities, if that matters.  She won't be a safe queen/square range beauty.  She'll earn her keep!

Thanks in advance for the information.

Maybe something like this would help you. If you look in the mounts, rings and bases section at the SWFA site they also have extended bases as well.

Sparky,

I've looked at the SSALT mount.  Looks good, for certain.  It's just that I already have a pair of high-end rings that will more than do the deed IF mounting one ring on the receiver and the other on the FF tube isn't an issue.  The SSALT is my plan B if the rings I have will be a problem.

Many thanks,

Old SF

SF,

Having a tough time visualizing a mount set up that would put the rings that far forward.  You running a scout setup?

What kind of scope?

Generally the AR forends are pretty stiff, but makes you wonder about the potential for some flex.  Doesn't seem realistic to flex the forend such that the mount is impacted without doing the same thing on the barrel but have seen guys torque the forend as they tried to muscle the rifle with a forward grip.

Rotation of the forend is probably more likely depending on how it is attached to the receiver but that should be easily remedied.

never bridge that gap between upper and handguard

If you don't need quick release this is the best on the market in my experience:

Marine, I'm running a Burris MTAC (4" eye relief)...Ocular end needs to be about over the charging handle (like in 'ccoker's' pictures), so the front ring would need to be well forward of the receiver.  It looks like 'ccoker' has answered my questions.  And it looks like I have a bit of shopping to do!

Thank you both,
Old SF

I would go with something like this.  http://swfa.com/Bobro-Precision-Optic-30mm-Mount-P47627.aspx  I have 3 or 4 of these and really like them.

American Defense also has a real nice one.  I have one of those but don't like the attachment system as well as the Bobro.  But it works great and is a great mount.

I have ADM mounts and they work well as do Bobro, LaRue, etc..

If you aren't going to be taking the optic on and off I prefer going with something like I recommended above.

It is a work of art.
Even has a level built into the rear for longer range use.

I definitely concur on the Aadmount.  I've been using these almost exclusively and they are are absolutely superb.

Yep, the only minor issue I have tried to use had like 1/10th of inch too short of mounting surface.
