I have been racking my brain trying to decide what scope to get to replace my Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40 I foolishly sold on another rifle. Budgetary concerns limit expenditure to the $600-1300 range. Scope will sit on a 16" Daniel Defense V3 in 6.8spcII I feel comfortable shooting deer out to 300- maybe 350 yards. My main concern is clarity at low light without stacking too many oz's.
Options I am considering.
Leupold VXIII 2.5-8x36 MSRP $499 - (Heard works great at low power) Leuplod VX6 1-6x24 Illuminated MSRP $1249 -(decent FOV & can use on 3 gun rifle after deer season) Leupold VX-R 1.25-4x20 MSRP $749 (I wasn't too impressed w/ 3-9x40 VX-R I owned previously) Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40 MSRP $1025 (Had and loved great at 3x in twilight/no batteries) Others you would recommend? Personal experiences with optics listed? Thanks in advance! |

Seeing that you had (and liked) the Trij Accupoint, why not get another?

SWFA has the 3-9 Accupoints for $871.25, why not buy another. If you want a little more brightness, consider the 2.5-10, it has a larger objective. I ran one on a 6.8 AR for awhile. It is a bit large for the rifle, but mine was suppressed (which helped balance things out) and it is about as good at low light as you can get.

In that price range, and if you didn't care for the Leupold VX-R (I like them personally), it's really hard to beat the Trijicon Accupoint 3-9X40.
If you're leaning toward an illuminated reticle it and the VX-R are the best options at your stated budget. |

For serious low light you have to give more attention to quality glass and coatings. I know wanting a good balanced rifle is one of your goals but seems like everything has a trade off. I like Leupold but when it comes to that last 60 seconds of "Legal" shootin time I have found some better than Leupold. And I have no experience with Trijicon. But as you would expect your gonna pay for top glass and coatings. I have gone almost exclusively Zeiss, IOR and US Optics. I have a Leupold on my favorite BAR 270 but have found that as good as it is. It can't keep up with the other three. I have had to pass on deer in the last few minutes of the day with the Leupold. Because I couldn't find the deer in the shadows or if they were in tall cover. With my go to 300wm with the Zeiss I have little trouble not just getting on the deer in last light but, most of the time I can tell if it is a shooter. Here are some from the Sample List to consider. Good Luck in your search and good hunting!!! And Welcome to the OT!! I think it would be impossible to beat that Zeiss 2-10X50 for low light performance...unless you bought one of the newer Victory Illuminated Zeiss models (and the extra $1K). To get more of an advantage you'd probably have to go a Night Vision optic.

Agree; that Zeiss 2.5-10X50 is your best option at the upper limit of the budget, if you're willing to forego illumination. I have an illuminated version of it, and it's spectacular.
Forgot to check the Sample List. |

Sample list is your best bet overall.
That having been said, one scope I do not see mentioned enough is Meopta Meostar 1.5-6x42: http://swfa.com/Meopta-15-6x42-MeoStar-R1-30mm-Rifle-Scope-P53612.aspx ILya

Thanks ILya, I saw that one and forgot to add it to the list. Do you know anything about the coating they use? I have ordered these for customers but have found no info on their coatings. A great scope for the money by the way. |

Meostars have top shelf coatings. Meopta, overall, is one of the best coating houses in the world.

I notice a huge difference between Trijicons 3-9 and the 2.5-10x56 of those two I prefer the 2.5-10x56. I also like Trijicons 5-20x50 but it has only 50 moa of internal adjustment and the Super Sniper
Is a better 5-20x50 |

I have been hunting with a 6.8 for 7-8 years.. It is a fantastic hunting round out to 300 for whitetails and hogs.. I have ran a TON of scopes trying to find a good balance between being able to get on something close and fast and being able to take clean shots at 29.59 after sunset on deer. I run a 1.5-6x42 S&B and think it is about ideal.. I would seriously recommend looking at the Meopta 1.5-6x42 like Ilya recommended. Damned good glass and they know how to design a lit reticle that doesn't do more harm than good in low light. Looking on the sample list for something like a Swaro or Zeiss equivalent is another good option. If you want something a little lighter the VXR 2-7 is a great scope as well and less money. You will give up a little bit on brightness at that 30 minute mark. Oh, another option (especially if you already have a flat top mount with 1" rings) would be a Swaro Z3 3-10x42 with the BRH reticle. I don't think you need to be worrying about dialing in for long ranges.. I just run a 200 yard zero and hold a little high for shots out to 300, not that big of a deal really.. And I LIKE tactical scopes where I can dial in my elevation. Good luck |

I run a 5X20X50 Accupoint with the BAC on my 7mm08 Rem 700 Varmint. I routinely sit to the very edge of darkness and have never had one issue with it.

So as an update to this tale, I purchased the Leupold 2.5-8 x 36 VX-3 which arrived in time for Deer season. Unfortunately, the rings did not. The few times I went out hunting I just ran my iron sights or a Nightforce 2.5-10 x42 I borrowed.
In my opinion the VX-3 2.5-8x36 is very clear, has fantastic eye relief , and is very light. I only wish I purchased something illuminated like the Trijicon. One of these days when I get higher level on this forum you might see it on the for sale section. Until then it will sit unmounted and sad.

I have had very good results with Meopta. Now if you don't mind taking a chance, you can look at the Nikko Stirling Diamond 2.5 - 10 x 50 with illuminated 4 reticle. Certified Japanese glass. And no kidding, theses scopes have very good low light performance. The risk is that sometimes Chinese quality control is spotty.Mine tracked and zeroed fine. These are in the $200 range from Swfa.

http://www.samplelist.com/TradeInForm.aspx SWFA takes scopes in trade if you want to go back to an illuminated optic trade it toward what you are after. Life is too short not to have illuminated optics.
