I've always been under the impression that the adjustable eyepiece on a scope was to make just the reticle appear crisp and sharp. On several of my newer scopes, I can look at a street sign for instance, and by rotating the ring, I can make the letters on the sign go from blurry to crystal clear. Has something changed or have they always been this way? Thanks.

Nope, always been that way. The eye piece is primarily used to make the reticle sharp though.
