Are there any rings like the SWFA rings or the Burris XTR that co-witness with an AR's standard front sight Post?
I have an SWFA 1-4 SFP and want to mount, but am looking for any weight savings I can get so I am trying to avoid buying a pepr or ssalt mount. Any helpful thoughts or opinion are welcomed. Thanks for the help. |

First and foremost, welcome.
Next, rings on an AR are tricky, but a few companies do make them - though I don't use them so cannot recommend. I googled "30mm cowitness rings" and got several immediate hits. Vortex appears to have some, and they aren't expensive; but I have no idea if they are any good. Lastly, can you explain the scenario where you would need this? I don't worry about cowitness on a 1X since the scope itself can act as the rear aperture in a pinch - or are you concerned with total scope blowout?

First off, thanks for the reply.
Secondly, I have know idea what "Scope blowout". Thirdly here is the story - I had enough AR paraphernalia laying around to build one so, I did. The barrel and gasblock I have are just the standard M4 style. So I guess cowitness is not the real issues I just don't want the FS tower to block the view of the scope. P.S. I just happened the have the SS 1-4 SFP because I jumped on their introductory offer when they first released them.http://www.opticstalk.com/smileys/Cool.gif I hope that clears the mudd a little bit. |

Howdy :Long Shot,
Welcome to OT forums. In my limited experience with AR scope mounts, something like the cantilevered bases you mentioned, or some forward leaner like the RRA hi- rise, are typically must- have for proper eye relief. Rings usually won't cut it. I know what you mean about the weight thing. I've taken my NM model up to 12+ lbs and just found some lead sheeting that might get her up to 16. No wait... |

I am going to try the vortex lower 1/3 rings. If they work I'll keep em if not I'll break down and buy a ssalt mount. I'll try to post a pic either way.
Thanks for the info fellas. |

I have run multiple optics behind a front site post, usually with out issue. My point, perhaps badly stated, is that only complete scope failure - as in glass completely obstructed - would be an issue, since the scope body itself can be a rear aperture for the front site post if really needed. The same is true of an aimpoint or red dot: dot dies, use the front site post, just know where rounds fall.
I would agree that starting with a purpose-built mount would be preferred, but would like to hear how it goes with the vortex rings.

Phone Number: (972) SCOPE-IT (972-726-7348) Call and ask SWFA what they have that would work for you. I tend to go with the La Rue quick detachable mounts the general consensus is that the Bobro mounts are as good. The SWFA ringmount should work fine as a fixed non detachable mount. Placement forward is desirable to access the charging handle. My experience is that if you dont want to see the front A2 type sight in lower power scopes remove it put a different gas block like the quad rail or a flip up sight style gas block, that way its not there to be a distraction. At higher power you do not notice the front sight it becomes a blur, but at low power like 1x it is quite visible and I doubt any mount will change that.
The concept of CO WITNESS is that an aimpoint red dot is placed between the front and back iron sight and the dot rests in correct position allowing one to tell if the rifle sight has been accidentally adjusted or damaged and providing illumination Edited by Urimaginaryfrnd - March/24/2015 at 16:42 |
