Well, decided about a month ago to buy this scope. I REALLY wanted the 4.5-27x version....let's emphasize the REALLY part.....but had to settle for the 3-18x, because it was in stock. The glass was so clear when they let me look through it at the gun store, it was like seeing Heaven! But, I thoroughly regret not going on the waiting list for 4.5-27x one now. Anyways, I finally handed over the money for this lovely scope and took it to the range. Now, the first time out the scope shot about 3-4" to the right and perfect elevation, my gun guy had bore sighted it pretty well. No matter what I did, I just couldn't get it sighted in with a good group at 100 yds. I shot the crappy old Nikko Stirling scope that came on my Howa better than I have my Vortex, unfortunately. I have had the scope through about 4-5 boxes of Hornady and Remington ammo. Today was the final straw! It still shoots 3-4" to the right, very consistently, no matter the adjustment. My local range where I shoot is filled with extremely knowledgeable older gentlemen that have tried and tried to help me. Two separate RO's have tried to help me, including taking a few shots themselves, but to no avail. Everyone who has shot it, or has spotted for me, have all come to the conclusion that something must be wrong internally. My elevation turret seems to work fine, but it seems like my windage tracks from time to time, but sometimes it doesn't even move. I'm pretty distraught that I dropped this much money, should've waited for the higher power, and am having these tracking troubles right out the gate. Now I can play my slice and still shoot ok, but I just assume send it back and get something that shoots where the cross hairs are.
Has anyone else had similar issues? Is this a common issue? I love the quality of glass, just wish I had a little higher power and a windage turret that worked. Glad I had the RO's around to prove I wasn't crazy or a horrible shooter. Heck, maybe it just got shaken up in shipping, maybe it was just defective, just seeing if this was a common deal. I would blame it on operator error, but with a few old timers who've been vocal on the issue after use and the fact that I shot better with the Nikko Stirling I just don't know what to think. It sure takes it out of a guy when he shoots horribly for a month.

First snd foremost, nice scope. I have one too and could not be happier. I hunt with mime frequently so 3X on the bottom is better for me. That, and >20X has never been a big thing for me, I just don't shoot well with that much magnification.
My first question would be to the guy that bore sighted. Did the windage move when he bore sighted? Next, who installed the scope? Were the rings installed with a torque wrench or just tightened? It is possible the rings are causing the internals to bind. That said, my scope seems incredibly tough, rings would have to be superman tight, I would think, but I have seen this before. And how close are the rings to the center saddle? Next, get a true bore sighted (attached to the barrel, stationary at the muzzle) and make an adjustment while looking through the scope, you should be able to watch the reticle move in relation to the bore sighter. Let me know. A picture of the setup would also be helpful. Rest assured, if something is wrong with the scope, Vortex will take care of you! |

I would make sure the diopter is set dead nuts. It really makes a differrence on a FFP scope. And of course make sure that all parallax is dialed out, not just set at 100 yards on the dial...
But sometimes they all fail. And Vortex will take care of you!

If u put the scope in some kind of vice at the range and aim at a target and adjust the windage while looking through it you should be able to see if it is moving or not.
I would also suggest checking ring torque as to much can cause issues |

Did you centre the adjustments before mounting the scope?? Maybe you are maxed out to one side? Have you tried adjusting to the opposite side? Does it go to the opposite side???

And lastly, make sure that the turret is properly cinched down. If someone at the store was messing with it, it is virtually guaranteed they mucked something up. I have never seen a gun store employee who knew which end of the scope points toward the target.

Hi, Boomer; welcome to OT!
Did you take a look at the issues suggested in the above posts? If so, have you come to any conclusions yet? I'm interested in your findings. If the problem is indeed with the scope and not your setup, Vortex has very good customer service and warranty coverage. |

I will eat crow gentleman. This issue was all human error, both on my gunsmith and myself. Thanks to Vortex's help we got it all fixed up. My 3 screws on my windage turret were loose and I think that caused the reticle to float right a few inches. I got it back on track! I was happy with my grouping at 100 yds, see link below. I shoot a Howa 1500 .308 with 20" bull barrel. Everything is still factory on her except the now correctly functioning Vortex scope. The gun loves Hornady's 150 grain American Whitetail load. I figure once I start reloading and get a better stock on it I will be shooting .5-.75" groups. I am fine with that as it is a hunting rifle first and paper puncher second!
Thanks again everyone, especially to the guys at Vortex! This is why I bought the scope, couldn't deal with a more stand up company. This is my public apology for recklessly blaming my equipment, and Vortex, when I was the problem! Thanks!
