Cannot find a post I think was on this forum within the last 18 months or so about hammers ocassionally hanging up for misfires on Ruger Redhawks and/or Super Redhawks. As I recall the solution was to mill a small amount off each side of the hammer. Can anyone shed light on this subject? I'm thinking about buying a Redhawk .45 Colt/ACP 4" for a hunting sidearm or at least that is my rationalization.

I too am interested in any information regarding this issue. I have a 4" Redhawk in 45 Colt that I love, I have shot everything from cowboy loads to +p Doubble Tap 335 gr and Buffalo Bore 325 gr hard cast ammo with no issues. If I did experience this problem I would send her back to Ruger or call Hamilton Bowen for advice.

My Redhawk has never had a problem in 25 years. This is a new one to me. It sounds like the hammer or frame would be outside of tolerance. Either way, milling might be a bit drastic to take off a few thou. If it is stainless, a fine file and a hard stone to polish should suffice. |

If it's a concern, you could just install hammer shims.

Shims might be a good solution if inspection indicates there is play. I'll have it apart to check everything anyway and possibly upgrade to a Wolfe spring set. I just remembered reading comments and a discussion about it and I probably will ask Hamilton Bowen or John Gallagher to see if it is a real issue or not.

I've been thinking about having Hamilton Bowen do one of his packages on mine.
