What magnification scope do you use for hunting Brown bear in Alaska? Going to Kodiak Island. Can my S&B 1.1-4x24 be used for double duty. I mean a dangerous game hunt in Africa and bear hunting in Alaska? Or should I buy a scope with an illuminated reticle?

The scope is great, what reticle? If you have the S&B #7 you don't really need illumination.

Yes Tahqua. My scope has the A7 reticle. I like the German #4 reticles. Less is more especially for my older eyes.

Whale, how did your bear hunt turn out, and what scope did you finally use?

illumination is the right way to go when hunting the big game, something from Leupold or NF would do.

Well the thread is a year old but we hope the hunt was successful if not we picked the wrong scope and he was eaten by the bear. Some of these dangerous game critters have earned their title so yes illumination can be a good thing but with any heavy caliber the amount of eye relief is critical due to recoil. Low power scopes like 1 - 4x are a good choice but double rifles with express sights are still on my wish list.

What kind of a comment is that? Most uninformed comment I think I've seen. |

Interesting power choice. I wonder why you choose that one?

Believe he is talking about the Leupold VX-6 4 -24.... which is still more than I'd want.... brown bear is 1-4 IMO

Sorry for not responding sooner. I have been recuperating from a car accident. My uncle and I did go to Alaska for brown bear. My S&B scope performed double duty from my .416 Rem Mag to my .338 Win Mag. However, I since purchased a Leica ER5 scope for my .338 Win Mag. I have a Leica ERi mounted on my .270 Win which serves as my deer rifle and I really like it.
