I just finished a new rifle build and wanted to share. I had a Brown "Pound'r" Kevlar stock for Rem 700 SA sitting in my closet for the past 10 years or so just begging to cradle some cool metal, so I finally gave in to temptation.
The goal for this project was to assemble the lightest hunting rifle I possibly could without sacrificing precision. So, with that in mind, the components are as follows: Pierce titanium short action. Broughton 5C 8-twist barrel chambered 6.5 Creedmoor, 22", fluted, Chambered so I can kiss lands with 120 gr Amax at 2.82" COAL. Contour is a custom order, something around a "2.5". Brown "Pound'r" Kevlar stock, weighing around 16 oz PT&G aluminum bottom metal Late 1980's/early 90's vintage Zeiss Diavari-C 3-9X36 scope Talley LW mounts Timney "Calvin Elite" trigger, set at 2 lbs Remington mag box, spring, & follower The lightest Pachmayr pad I could find Custom touches: I skeletonized the root of the bolt handle with slot/holes. Doesn't reduce much weight, but looks cool. I primed, textured, and painted the stock with Durakote in 4 colors, using the "sponge camo" technique, then clearcoated with matte Durakote. Barrel finished with salt-bath black nitride (trade names "Tenifer," "Melonite," "QPQ," etc.). Remaining black parts finished with KG Gun Kote. The receiver was treated with titanium carbonitride PVD coating, which makes the surface extremely hard and imparts a bluish-gray color to the titanium. The bolt shroud, bottom metal, and barrel flutes finished with Blue Titanium Cerakote. Laser engraved caliber designation. Action bedded with Pro Bed 2000 epoxy I don't have 6.5 Creed dies yet, so I just bought some Hornady factory loads with 120 Amax for the first 2 range sessions. On the first range session, groups were disappointing at .75 - 1 MOA. I discovered the mag box was applying too much pressure between the bottom of the receiver and bottom metal. I filed some material off the bottom of the mag box to relieve the binding, and groups shrank to .4 - .6 MOA. She shows potential, so I'm looking forward to working up some loads. Not bad for such a light rifle shooting the first ammo tried, without even tweaking any handloads yet. I haven't weighed it yet, but based on comparison to other light rifles I have, it will probably weigh about 5 lbs all up. Why? Why the hell not? And, because I have a sickness. Anyway, here she is: |

Ok, I tried to upload photos, but the server is very slow for some reason and it wouldn't allow me to do so. Will try again later.

Looks fine! Good Camo for a ragweed field. I can't fathom having the time for all your projects. It is an inspiration.

Very interesting. How fast does that light barrel heat up? Although if you aren't doing long strings it won't really matter.
