I watched a good B&W movie Saturday. It was released in 1966 and was made in B&W for the artistic effect. It was "The Train" with Burt Lancaster.
I remember that "The Train" and "Von Ryan's Express" with Frank Sinatra and Trevor Howard cam out at the same time. I didn't see either until they came out on TV. I saw The Train first, and thought it was great. Then I saw Von Ryan's Express, and thought it was ho hum, and it was in color.

Oh my God!!! THE TRAIN was a juggernaut of excitement!  John Frankenheimer said that Burt Lancaster taught him more about action shots on one movie than he had learned in his whole young life, up to that point!!

I saw Von Ryan's Express at the theater in 1965.  I thought it was good.  I've got the DVD.  It is a GOOD example of a good old war movie.  It's not 'Bridge on the River Kwai' or 'Saving Private Ryan', but it's good old-fashioned Fictional entertainment with a speck of a historical back story in it.

The direction could have been a little tighter.  Trevor Howard is such a Pompous HAM (as usual), Frank Sinatra ( a big favorite of mine ) sometimes speaks his lines a little too New JOISEY...., but, still, it was a first class movie.  It ain't Gone With The Wind.

I did not see The TRAIN until the nineties on TV.  Freaking fantastic!
