A few shots from our recent trip...

This gave me a sense of how dangerous these places can be in a summer gully washer:

It wasn't all desert:

But you never have to travel far to get back to dry country (the Escalante):

Zion Canyon (I liked the contrast enough to go Ansel Adams on this one):

Vertical pano of the waterfall above Emerald Pools:

A nice spot in the shade:

Another artsy-fartsy shot:

And rock inside the Hidden Canyon (accessible along a trail that requires holding onto a chain once in a while):

Reaction time is a factor...

Flash floods in the dessert are nothing to toy with.
I had a friend a long time ago who lived in the dessert and he said when it rained, they would leave home.

I wouldn't have ever thought that would be an issue. However, wow!

My first time visiting Zion I thought someone had taken a red paint brush to Yosemite, it was beautiful.

Nice photos, Jon! Zion is at the top of my list of national parks I've never visited that I'd love to see some day soon. All the photos I've seen of it tells me it's a beautiful place!

Drowning is the second cause of death in the desert.

I knew a guy who lost a Ramcharger crossing the running wash in Aneth, Utah.  It stalled as soon as he went off the bank!  I crossed there twice that day---back and forth, in a Bronco.
